Description

This is an autobiography that tells the story of Akiko Hayashi, the author as she was in her third year of high school at the beginning of the story. Through her friend Futami, Akiko starts going to an art class led by Kenzou Hidaka, an intimidating teacher who spends much of his time yelling at his students and keeping them focused on drawing with the use of a bamboo sword. Akiko is initially confused by the behavior of the teacher and her fellow students in the class, but she keeps going regardless, eventually becoming the manga author she is today. 6y4g3a

Not that good

I'm never read this author other book so I'm not her fans or anything, so my view on this book is based solely on the quality for this book only.

The story is about author life, to be honest really strange. Author keep telling reader he want to make manga from the start yet she never even tried "once". Trying and failing is one thing, but never even tried draw or even research on how to draw manga is another. Second she go to art classes that draw sketch and oil painting, I know both involve drawing but both are not exactly the same, in the end of course the author realize. Second the teacher on the cover was not all that good, with strict and inconsiderate personality I find it difficult to understand him, even after the book end.

Some maybe say this is book for regret but to be honest when I read it, it just some across as an act to whine. The whole book is whine, whine, whine, brag and repeat, the collage arc is one of the worst with author keep whining for an entire book, the author it that collage is pretty much blank canvas, but do a blank canvas need whole book to explain it? Also the author may looks like she regret doing thing, but to be honest it doesn't come across like that to me, author feel like a simply ignorant human being, by the end I don't feel anything, not sad, not happy just a confused feeling at how her life even made into book despite her life that not that great nor sad.

The story telling also come across as a mess, author often put the summary in the front before he goes into the detail pretty much remove all the surprise. The story also often take a unnecessary detour which sometimes is really annoying.

Kakukaku Shikajika is not that good, I still can't relate to the author at the end I feel blank, author trying to make it sad but I just don't feel it. The story telling can be quite a mess, the author often repeat herself, it just not as good as other people make it to be.

A Long and Good Slice of a Most Interesting Life

Manga is mostly fluff. That's understandable. All popular entertainment is mostly fluff. However, fluff can include really good storytelling, and it is as good storytelling that material about how real life is experienced by real people sometimes creeps into the manga canon.

Here we have a case of that, in which the creator of "Kuragehime" tells the tale of her youth and growth as a person and as an artist. She turns out to be a really interesting person, and we already know from her other work that she is a good artist. The result is that this is a great tale, and one that bears the stamp of reality and actual human feelings.

This is no doubt an amazing series... the author is able to express her gratitude n regret in a way that we can relate to. I'm also amazed by how the author can do the time switch between the present n the past, to create a continuous monologue that stab the readers heart - n the most painful stab is when the author ended the story... very beautiful (the idea to put the photographs is amazing)

Added by a really great moral message, I know that this short series is one of the masterpiece that I found in manga world.

Thank you God, thank you the author, thank you the publisher, thank you the scanlator, n thanknyou for my friend who recommend this to me... thank you...

A story about love and regret.

This is a brilliant autobiography. The star of the story, besides our protagonist, is her oldschool arts teacher, and the story is full of (platonic) love and regret towards him.

The story is elevated by the author's frankness - she pulls no punches, in particular when it comes to what she'd later consider mistakes on her part. At one point or another, every reader will recognize themselves in the story. Be it the notion of naively going to (art) college without any idea of what to do afterwards; or wasting years of one's time at college; or not properly saying goodbye to someone and then regretting the fact; or maybe just childhood nostalgia.

I found Kakukaku Shikajika both highly refreshing and entirely unique. Consider this a universal recommendation.

She was writing her life together with her Art teacher as debt of gratitude maybe? Or she was wallowing on regret on her selfish actions? Can be both. But the way she illustrate her art teacher seems to me, that old man didn't regret on his decisions and never put the burden on others. If Akiko is still agonizing about his death, she knows well how to pay him back and continue his legacy, but she's not heroic as his teacher,but who knows she'll start from scratch later in her life too.

There is a quote that goes something along the lines of this:

"Dead people receive more flowers than the living ones because the regret is stronger than gratitude."

I originally found this manga while waiting for Kuragehime (which is by the same mangaka) to update. This manga captures both the feeling of nostalgia and regret that comes with retrospection and in every there is the feeling that this manga is not only an autobiography of the mangaka, but a sorry letter addressed to her sensei who essentially shaped her career. Without giving any more spoilers (eek), this manga is a poignant read, with bits of laughter and nostalgia on every page.
