It's got some fantastically written and drawn characters, but the story doesn't really do anything with them. The whole thing just meanders from one short arc to another with no style, flair, or drama. There is some semblance of romance teased at the beginning that could have been the best part of the manga, but absolutely nothing is done with it. By the end the story just fizzles out without a satisfying payoff.

Such an adorable series, but also rather ionate. I was worried about how dance would work in manga form, and how Yokota-sensei would work without a writer/a story to draw from, but it's really good stuff. I like the vibe it has, mostly. It really gets to me. Wrote a review on it going over things in further detail.

Manga about dancing always seem to bring something unique and special to the table. This one is no exception. Its protagonists are great, low-key characters who are overshadowed by the remaining cast in of looks, height, skill, talent, everything... Watching them struggle to improve, to overcome their weaknesses, and just to have fun, is such a heart-warming experience.

Plus, just as in Double Arts, this manga lends itself well to having meaningful girl protagonists. The girls in the dance couples don't have exactly equal screentime to the boys, but they still get a far better deal than in any other shounen manga.

I hope this manga keeps running for a long, long time.

EDIT: Sadly, the manga did not keep running for a long, long time, and I wasn't entirely satisfied by the ending. The final arc is a long tournament competition in which our protagonists' senpais mostly steal the show. Which is fine for a story arc, but somewhat unsatisfying for a final arc.

The ending is still fine for what it is, but it didn't really meet my absurdly high expectations D:. That said, the story is still definitely worth reading overall; I just recommend you somewhat lower your expectations for chapters 82~86.

PS: And if you did enjoy this manga, definitely check out the mangaka's other works, as well. I particularly enjoyed Shudan!.

Many good things (and one huge problem)

I started reading this manga without expecting much. But I was pleasantly surprised.
There are many refreshing elements, starting from the central theme, competitive ballroom dancing. It's not one of those shounen where sports have improbable moves and special techniques. It's about ballroom dancing, for real.
The characters are all likeable, without exception. Maybe they're not that well-defined yet, but there's time for that (hopefully, but I'll get to that soon). They are all really refreshing and more realistic than what you'd see normally in a shounen manga. The MC is what a somewhat shy highschooler is supposed to be: not an exaggerated loser, not an improvised genius. More than that, he can interact normally with girls without the cliché of the "healthy young man", which is dropped after two chapters. The most outstanding character may be the female lead. First of all, she's bound to stay in the spotlight for the whole manga, given the type of sport they practice. No risk of leaving her behind to follow the MC's progress. But what surprised me the most is that she's really different from the female leads you often find in these manga. She's not a tsundere, not the popular girl, not the cute loli: you may say she's as average as the main character. She's also really quiet compared to other female leads, so much that sometimes I thought she was too much of a background character: but everytime I thought that, she came out with some surprise, and now I'm assured she's a great character on her own. All of the club have their quirks and are fun to read about; while for now the focus is strictly on the MC, there's no risk of getting bored in the event of chapters dedicated to other characters. The interactions between the various characters (and the main leads especially) feel natural and somewhat soothing. There's no serious drama that would drag this manga down, and the reader can relax and enjoy the various situations without second thoughts. But it's not episodic either: you have the clear idea of a steady flow. I see this manga keeping strong up to hundreds of chapters.
The art is good, even if the two main characters are a bit cartoonish, but you learn to like them the way they are pretty quickly.
In the end it's not a masterpiece, but it does simple things in a really good and enjoyable way.

Now the big problem it has: it's serialized in Shounen Jump. Meaning that the axe is always a possibility (given the type of manga). But even worse than the axe is what Bakuman taught me: editors who butt in to try and make it more "jumpish". The risk of seeing this become a dull (dance) battle manga or a harem is always present. Seeing recent developments harem is not to be excluded (even though there are no signs of it yet). I'd rather see the manga end than becoming something like this. May the spirit of Double Arts save it.

All in all, definitely recommended.

Update: So far it seems that my worries were unjustified: the manga is staying true to itself and enjoyable. Well done!

Classic Shounen, With a Girl Struggling Too!

The standard shounen formula ordinary leaves me cold. I'm old enough to have learned how often even the most determined struggles can come to nothing, and the story of young men doing their absolute best in struggling for some goal ("gambare") is the essence of shounen manga, more often than not.

Usually those boys are struggling in some sport, or in laying the foundation for some later education or profession. This story is different is that it's not just boys struggling, but a boy and a girl, AND their struggling in an activity, dance, that we don't often hear about in Japan. This is a wonderful innovation. First, because it gives us fascinating, proto-romantic interactions between the hero and heroine, and, second, because the heroine is drawn as a petite high school girl who is just about the cuteist character I've ever seen.

And did I mention that they are both short, and also both kind of insecure? I think most people like stories of underdogs struggling to prevail. I know I love them. I was actually crying at one point in reading this manga!

Seriously, it's got a great formula, great main characters, and a new, interesting world (that of dance) to learn about. It's also naturally an open-ended story, that could grow into a fascinating long series. I'm rooting for it.
