Description

I liked the summary, so I gave it a shot. I thought the basis for the plot (i.e., the fire) was already pretty flimsy, but since it seemed like huge deal, I pushed through to see if there was significance that I was missing out on. The scene is set for a dramatic soap-opera of sorts: noble daughter, innocent younger sister, frail-vague-disease mom with bonus amnesia, evil over-the-top other woman with bonus back-stabbing friend attribute, all wrapped up in a revenge plot with a side of mystery.

As it went on, I did like the parallel stories between the brothers/sisters, but I knew all those elements would just lead to a lot of drama. There was also two quasi-romance subplots that just didn't work for me, to be honest, especially the one that ended up being the main romance plot. Well, one of them did but the other was too inconsistent and they kept drawing back to the past to make their connection seem more real. In reality, his behavior was too bizarre (he's simultaneously lucid then goes violent then he's logical again and stays that way, I guess...okay, is he unhinged or not? What was all that??) Also, I had to roll my eyes at

Kiichi asking Anzu to be his slave after he puts the pieces together. What the heck is this trope in manga? Lol. I had to double check this wasn't a shoujo.

Also

their dad suuuuuuuuuuucks major nuts. Literally the worst person. Who just up and abandons their kids for 13 years? Who has that little faith in their wife and just mindlessly believes her random ass friend at the time? What a massive loser. I wish the author had made the mom character less of a hothouse flower who's so perfect so it would actually be believable that the dad would doubt her, at least. Like, he f*cking beat this woman physically!! If she DID burn your hospital and house down, you could forgive her with the way you never defended her against your sisters and treated her like a servant!! Also him bitching that Yuzu might possibly be after him for money....YOU'RE HER FATHER? YOU ABANDONED HER FOR 13 YEARS? Under the circumstances, even if she was after you for money, you can throw her a few damn bucks. What a rotten guy, it's a good thing in the grand scheme they got away from that monster. He cared more about his reputation than his family, right up to the end.

Also, this story had a few too many twists and why the hell did Shinji's med school friend become a plot point? It was so unnecessary. Just needlessly dramatic when there is a story that should be told. By the point she becomes a bigger deal than she should have been, the story was already getting kind of boring and I started to skim through the rest. So essentially, by ch. 24...it drags. Anzu is pretty cool as a female lead, but honestly this manga ended on such a bland note. It wasn't really that great of a journey except in parts, but I liked Anzu as an MC and Makiko is an amazing villain, truly evil, lol. But the ending was soooo ridiculous, sorry.

Gripping

I originally read the Korean translations because they were ahead but came back to reread the manga in English after seeing that the scans had caught up, and still enjoyed it almost as much as the first time through. Like others have said, the suspense and twists keep the reader captivated the entire way, and the ending also wrapped things up very nicely. Really a wonderful read.

fascinating psychothriller

This is definitely missing the "thirller" tag. I'm usually good at figuring them out, but Fujisawa managed to build in so many twists and turns without a miss or deterring from the story. The strength lies in the deep dive into each character's motives so you can slowly see the whole picture coming together. While the twists where unexpected they never felt out of place or time, because the writing was consequent and suspenseful in just the right places.

I don't know how to feel about the couple in the ending, a bit out of place but also kinda making sense in a liberating way. Doesn't make a dent in this brilliant work though.

Excellent Storytelling

Calling it the "gold standard" might be a bit presumptuous. That said, there are very few manga I've read that handle it better.

There's a bit of a caveat:

And it's the ending, because of course it is. My expectation when I started reading was that the ending would leave every character licking their wounds and trying to find a way to move on. To my shock, the ending is incredibly sappy and there seem to be no lasting consequences for literally ANYONE. If the manga had been any less excellent throughout its run, I would've definitely docked a point or two, just for how unrealistic the ending and especially the relationship between Anzu and Kiichi is.

And that relationship, hoo boy, I could write a fair few paragraphs on how dumb it is. Honestly, it just doesn't fit this manga, along with the rest of the final chapter. Things are just wrapped up too nicely. And Anzu and Kiichi's relationship seems forced in addition to being too unrealistic to fit neatly with the rest of the manga's story.

Do I recommend Mitarai-ke, Enjou suru? Absolutely. It is one of the best manga I've read.

This story is really good. The art is not amazing but the suspense really drew me in. The plot twists were so good and almost each chapter left me on the edge of my seat. I ended up buying until the latest volume (currently vol. 7) to find out the latest development and I have to say that it is worth the money!

Update:
I just finished reading the final chapter and I must say that this was one of the best read I've had across all genres. I loved the ending! Anzu is a badass and she is now one of my favourite female leads. You won't find a damsel-in-distress in her. Also, gotta give props to Clare, Anzu's cool best friend because her skills helped Anzu a lot plus she helps put both Anzu and Yuzu in check too.
