Now why can't all yaoi manga be like that? It was an emotional rollercoaster with a happy and tear jerking ending. It's truly a masterpiece! Love the art even though it's outdated... Perfect! I really want to read any yaoi manga similar to NYNY.

For the who gave this a 1, how the heck can´t this be a masterpiece? This Manga deals with the problems and difficulties gay couple face in society, and it also brings us readers a REALISTIC view on how a gay relationship actually can look like. If you didn´t read through the manga then you´ve really missed out on something original and very rare in the yaoi-genre.

I personally loved the characters, Kain was not likeable in the beginning because the author choose to portray him as an egostical player. But as you read furthur, you could see that Kain really loved Mel from all his heart and cared about him alot. I also liked that the author choose to focus on such serious topics as societys view on homosexuality ( Well this Manga is rather old, if you compare the year 1995 to 2012 there is a huge diffrence on how homosexuals are viewed, I think they´re alot more accepted now) and HIV. Because of such realistic topics, you could really sympathize with the characters and feel sad for the tragic events they had to be put through.

When it considers the art....well it sure is old, but you get used to it. It isn´t that bad, but it isn´t either that good. Also, if you like your average fluff or smut this isn´t for you. There is no vivid sexscenes and this isn´t something fluffy. The story is rather tragic and full of emotion, haven´t cried this much since I read the Manga complex.

Either way, Read it. Or miss out on something amazing.

This manga was so awesome and dramatic that it made me cry so hard.The story so beautiful,characters are beautiful...I loved the art style,especially those expressive eyes,they say so much to you about how characters feel...Loved it to the end 🙂

Oh I'm afraid not.
I strongly disagree with the majority. This was boring, difficult to read, the characters were really unlikeable, the situations were irritating and I couldn't bring myself to read on.
I didn't get very far in the manga so I can't speak for how it turned out, but it just wasn't working for me.
I felt the jump from acquaintances to lovers was a bit too quick, and I wasn't able to emphathise with any of the characters.
Usually, a story with not-so-good art makes up for it with plot and character but this one, for me, failed on every level.
I'm by no means suggesting however that it'll be the same for others because obviously the comments below me appear to disagree.
All in all, I'm disappointed. I had heard about the kind of subjects this manga touched on and thought it would be great, but it just...wasn't.

A rare masterpiece in this genre

I need to first get this out the way because this one situation in the first couple of chapters shaped my views to the very end...

Why the hell did the author have Kain sleep with the ex Mel tried to kill himself over? That absolutely disgusted me. Adding to it, it was after the fact Mel had been raped by Kain's partner and then almost killed by him. After all this I really thought there was some progress with Kain and he wouldn't do anything to lose Mel after he seen how much he cared for him. The author could have shown Mel was good hearted and forgiving without going this far. After Mel went missing I seriously thought Kain would cheat on him again because he was "lonely"... -_- Because of this I couldn't trust Kain until the very end of the story.

That aside, I agree most with Doki's review. The approach to homosexual and homophobia was more realistic and refreshing than most other BL stories. The beginning of the story seems a bit "typical" and it was hard for me to like the characters, but it gets much better as it continues on. Nearing the end I found myself so wrapped up in Kain and Mel's lives that it almost felt like I was part of their family. I really enjoyed the ending and cried many tears, both happy and sad.

Oh and the art! I loved it honestly, being dated and all. I've read manga's drawn 2006+ that had didn't have art as nice as NYNY, so that's not an issue.

Because of the approach this manga takes on homosexuality, it's deserving of a 10, but because of what I mentioned in the spoiler section and the typical beginning I am giving it 9.5.

Edit: Well after I was finished reading, the last couple of pages of Kain and Mel's story just kept replaying in my mind, sometimes even making me teary eyed. Only manga's to have that effect on me are in my top 3. This is worth a full 10.

I can't even begin to count how many times i put off reading this because of the outdated art. Which a mistake I make often and regret later because I realize what I've been missing. I ed this manga 4 months ago. I started reading it this morning, I finished it in 4 hours, I simply couldnt leave it before I was finished.

Having an outdated art wasnt the only reason I put off reading it. I hate Action mangas, Drama puts me to sleep, Psychological messes with my head and dont even get me started on Tragedy. So as you can see the only thing that had me going for this was the YAOI part and the high rating. Which is funny because this manga now is in my top 3. And mind you when I say 3, I mean the top 3 from the over 1500 mangas I've read! YES I READ A LOT OF MANGA!

So, I can't really explain how good this manga is. You just have to see for yourself! It's one of those mangas that make you think {mangaupdates} should have an 11/10 rating reserved for it. Trust me, even if you hate every single genre this manga falls under, HELL even if you hate yaoi, u will LOVE this manga.

STOP! dont ignore my comment, go it or buy it or whatever u wanna do and start reading it, it's worth every second you spend on it

One of the best yaoi manga ever

Simply so good! I nearly bawled my eyes out toward the end. It have its share of happiness, sadness, darkness, tears, etc.

The realistic situation is the driven force of this manga. Kain was afraid of someone finding out his sexuality and hides that fact of his sexual preferences. As the story goes on, we go through situations that are placed before Kain and Mel; like the meeting of Kain's parents, Mel's dark past, and the trama that Mel had to go through in the last 2 volumes.

The character development is a 10, given how sometimes petty fights or doubts can show what everyone's fears are deep inside; being that is they are being insecure or little doubts. Kain probably first came out as a playboy/jerk, but we slowly see that his devotion toward Mel was real and steadfast. Mel felt he was dirty and unworthy, and we see how he overcome his past (although some people probably won't agree with me with the "overcoming" part).

Storyplot is also a 10. Being that the manga first started in 1995, homosexuals were looked down upon and AIDS was referred to gay man disease way back then. The environment is the shaping force of this story.

Unfortnately, this manga not something smutty yaoi-fans would want to read. But I encourage you to keep an open mind and try to give this manga a try, so that you can at least have an idea of this gay couple's lifestyle and what they go through on the daily base when it comes to persecution, etc.

A rare sort of story.

What stood out most to me with this series was the realistic approach to homosexuality-- the stigma associated with homosexuality and the hardships that come with it. The majority of yaoi manga ignore this aspect or gloss over it because realism is not what the industry calls for. But the difficulties that come with being gay are central to this series and realistic to the time period it was created in. It's a refreshing change for a BL fan who's a bit tired of the generic depthless smut.
Beyond that, the art is wonderful, if you don't mind the dated feel. Kain's actions in the beginning had me questioning whether or not I would like this series, but everything fell into place beautifully. The ending had me in tears-- happy tears at the beautiful end of an honest love story.

Beautiful Story with Depth

While the story is a bit dated, it really delves into the characters' and time period's psyche. Romance, action and a thriller all rolled into one. The first couple of pages I was ready to give up on it thinking it wasn't my cup o' tea, but am so glad I stuck with it since the plot and storyline truly hook you... Haven't read a manga in a while that prompted me to write a comment. This is definitely a story with meat to it.

There is a reason that this has forty-six +10 votes. It is an amazing story.

For the art, well, it takes a little getting used to, but after the first chapter or so It really started to grow on me. Clean lines and nice proportions.

The plot was the main part. The drama made my chest hurt... It was a really powerful, touching story.

Even if you aren't a fan of yaoi, I would really recommend this story. Beautifully put together, and even though I was tempted to give in a 9 or an 8 because there are some things that don't make sense in the story, I decided to give it a 10 because it is such a unique story and so unlike other I have read.
