Really forgetable, apparently

I started reading this manga for what i assumed to be the first time, only to realize at around 15 chapters in i've already read it.
It's not that bad but i honestly didn't expect to so completely forget it. Then again, could be my goldfish brain at work :/

not exactly a zombie manga

it have 'zombies' in it, but it dont have the questions usually posed in zombie stories because there are no horde of unthinking beings, running for survival, collapse of the civilization and all the she-bang. there's no ned to even call them zombies, just a generic monster. or zombie/vampire monster union because theres some trope of being 'different' and being 'alone' that is associated with vampires.

however, that does not mean i dont like it because it dont follow the usual trope. this manga is quite okay, actually and contrary to other reviews that say it was good at first and then go considerably worse, i think its 'okay' at first and went a less okay. the last part is quite rushed and things go everywhere but i dont feel too letdown because the first half also is quite chaotic. some things happen without really proper route and you are left to puzzle things in your own. and it seems the last chapter can be lengthened to a couple more chapters.

and the worst part of this manga to me is the character art. it's so easy to confuse one person with another because they all look quite 'wishy-washy'. i love the style of sketch-like art, but it's real bad when the characters just bland and blend together.

so all in all, i'm okay with this manga. i dont actively recommend this nor discouraged anyone for reading this as it is not that long, and there are still some good points in this manga even i had said loads of bad points of it.

I just read 2 chapter so far yet I don't understand the manga at all.
I don't know is it my english that terrible or the scanlation group that did not translate it well, but I couldn't understand every single conversation there. It seems it doesn't have meaning at all. on a conversation there's too much words that didn't coherent with the main topic and I don't know whose dialog balloons on one because it's too crowded, yet it didn't give detail explanation of the situation.
Well it's an early judgement, but I hope I'll get more details as I read more..

Had to make an just to comment, because this is easily one of the best manga's around, my personal favorite at the moment. The art style is beautiful keeping a nice inky, very japaneese feel, while setting a nice dark tone for the manga. The best thing is that the characters are actual characters, the protagonist is likable and we get to see him go through some real emotional struggles with some natural un-manga like dialogue, an active heroin who actually puts things together herself and isn't a princess peach. I love the fire extinguisher bit btw. I read a comment below about Nagasawa being the only fighter against the nightshift. Well the people he's working for dont' really come off as in it to win it. Hell we don't know anything about them, we know as much as Nagasawa and that's not much. Which in turn adds to the manga a whole lot more that and he isn't and the people who are come in later.The real reason this manga is awesome is that not a single stroke is wasted, not a word, not a single . Even the ones without dialogue. This manga is much too obscure for its awesomeness and really should be more popular. OH and in reply to another comment below about there being elements of the story that are left and not played out. Well they do come back however this story is more an experience in the shoes of the protagonist then anything else, yeah we get bits where we are with Shirai and she's peicing things together but the big moments all come from Nagasawa, his emotions and how he acts, reacts and goes through this event. So yeah there are plot threads that are built and left untied like the bit where the doc opens the wrong box ad gets bitten by a bunch of rats, awesomely dar humor btw.. done well.. which comes back kinda but not as a huge revelation or anything. Not stupid but misleading. That said manga's not over yet so we'll see it through cause thought that is a minus its minuscule and this manga still deserves a 15.5 out of 10 easily. WOAH ITS DONE... err... later imma binge....

k... ive read the rest and err... mediocare.... kinda destroyed the awesomenes... ok at best.

Weird dialogue, excellent heroine

The story pacing seemed odd. I thought it might have something to do with how often it was in print or maybe the mangaka didn't know how much the publisher was going to allow as far as chapters go, I don't know, but the pacing was certainly weird.

That said, the heroine (not actually the protag) was fantastic. She is smart, tough, and dependable. A little dense when it comes to romance, but ... well rationally, when things are as dire as all that, romance probably shouldn't be the first thing on your mind.

The ending was a little to pat, but the art in the "scary" scenes was fantastic. The early s with the rats and such were amazingly good.

As pompous of me as it may be, please don't blindly trust the negative comments below. I really like this manga. I’ve been actually searching for a manga just like this for many a month now, and this is delivering in full. The characters are nicely fleshed out, very likable, and most of all, believable! Instead of other mangas that take one aspect of any sort of zombie apocalypse and just extreme it, this is not that manga. The diseased main character is strong, but not outrageously so (yet), he loses himself at times, but not randomly and without warning, like in other managas. This manga show a more interesting build with a slow and more believable (as believable as something can be with zombies and bubonic-like plagues) story. The romance thrown in is a perfect dash of flavor in the dark and horror. The elements are mixed nicely to a more mysterious keep-you-guessing plot instead of the episodic in your face deus ex machina stuff other mangas have.

Where I haven't finished the manga just yet, I’m sure I'll be back in a few days with my final word on the topic. Give it a read, it picks up nicely.

fathom, you show yourself to be not quite observant. did you see a page where there is a bunch of new shirts and school jacket? the one when nagasawa decide to overcome his fear and open the cabinet? this rule out washing the shirt every night. also, about the doc saying its not good to risk healthy soldier from getting bitten. a quarantine area on the forest. a kickboxer. and threat about stopping treatment.

if those plot elements played in full, i believe they will answer your curiosity against plot holes easily. the thing is, they're never played out in full, but just only as a ing through, mysteriously, (which make me curious too). i suspect they are saved for future revelation. only time can tell if the mangaka is intelligent enough to make use those spread out elements to make up much more interesting (and solid) stories.

that makes, so far, i agree, the manga is still quite stupid.

disconnect w/ male lead

Nagasawa gets bit by an infected rat, then he suddenly finds out he's got some mutant skills (sort of like Spiderman). It turns out there some sort of zombie plague going on around the area. The rats have been infected and are attacking humans, who then attack other humans. So what happens when some secret organization finds out about Nagasawa's sudden mad skills? They coerce him into killing the zombie as a night job for medical treatment.

Here's the stupid plot hole I couldn't get . Why is Nagasawa the only one fighting? If they're worried about other people getting infected, shouldn't they just get some sort of armored suit and some long range weapons or a blow torch to kill the stupid zombies? Why not quarantine the area, find out who's healthy and do an evacuation? Then they can just raze the whole area to the ground to kill all infected and rats? Another thing was that the high school is having a night time bone fire w/ a veritable feast of students outside, why are all the zombies gathering in the empty high school. It's a stupid plot, well...all zombie plots are stupid to begin w/. One other observation is that why is Nagasawa always fighting in his school uniform? Does that get tiresome washing the blood out each night? Kind of reminds me of all the stupid series I've seen where girls are wearing sailor uniforms while fighting in various series.

I still think it's horribly inefficient to have one high schooler do all the fighting. Anyone w/ any type of weapons; sword, guns, or fire could actually do the fighting as long as they don't get bitten. Also, wouldn't it be easier to just set out real bait nightly so that the zombies come to them instead? In addition, why isn't the government or the secret organization trying to clone Nagawasa or duplicate his DNA to get more fighters like him?

I tried to like the male lead, but there's this horrible disconnect w/ him and the audience. He doesn't talk much, and you don't see much inner monologue either. Nagasawa’s powers are cool, but his personality is bleh. A lot of the s are done from the heroine's POV, who is kind of annoying to me. She's determined to follow Nagasawa around while he fights, but she doesn't provide any whatsoever. If I was her and knew what was going on, I'd be carrying a bat w/ me everywhere at night.

Overall, the artwork is ok, but I’m not interested in the story line at all.

Very good manga

This was surprisingly good. I like the mysterious aspect of what is happening to the main character, which keeps me reading and wondering. I have read 21 chapters, and a new plot development has me wondering even more. I really whish that more was scanlated. Read it if you ant a good story with some nice bloody scnes that really make you wonder. 🙂

It wasn' too bad then went down hill

I've read 18 chapters and so far I like this series. I think it has potential. There is still a mystery of what's going on, like who or what is behind this outbreak. Who can Nagasawa trust? He knows he's being used, but how much so? What is really happening to his body? There is also a certain level of creepiness going on that's good. Physically and emotionally Nagasawa is not some shonen hero with a never give up/can do I must protect everyone attitude. He's just an awkward teenager that something horrible is happening to and I think that comes across well.

I think the weakest part of the series is the art. Its a bit sketchy at times especially when it comes to the characters. I would like to see stronger cleaner lines. The fight sequences could also be a bit better.

I don't know why anyone would want to compare this to High School of the Dead. HSOTD though serious and apocalyptic at times is also a bit of a spoof on the Zombie genre especially when you consider all the fan service that's thrown in. I like HSOTD its fun, but Dawn Tsumetai Te takes a different approach to the genre. So far its smaller on scale (you don't have endless waves of zombies attacking) that may change it the future who knows? There's also more emphasis on mystery, there's many questions and I'm interested in seeing how the author will handle them.

So I think its off to a good start. If the mangaka can raise his game a bit in the art department and offer some good revelations on the mysteries I think it will be a good read. If it instead turns into some kind of battle manga then it will be disappointing.

So I finished this and I have to say it kind of went down hill. The story got very choppy. There were scenes that weren't connected well together and the ending was kind of rushed and too easy. The end really didn't deal with the problem of the NightShift or really the consequences of what happened to Nagasawa the main lead. The art didn't get better and the story got weaker. The story felt like it could have gone on longer and I think that would have helped it some. So, I'm disappointed as I thought it had some potential and I'm downgrading my score to a 5.
