I read through the first chapter of this manga about a year ago then stopped. I thought it was hilarious but then you guessed it, the art along with how bad I felt for Kitano diverted my attention to other manga, mostly ecchi and mainstream stuff. Having read reviews, I finally convinced myself that this manga might be worth reading so I finally gave it a shot.
First let's talk about art. The art in the first two volumes were honestly mediocre but it gets a lot better. In the 3rd - 9th volumes it looks a bit like Slam Dunk or any other 90's manga. Then finally in the 10th to 15th volumes the author finally had his distinct style. The backgrounds were very detailed and awesome.
Now to talk about the plot. I would easily classify this manga to be more of comedy and romance before fighting mainly because it tells the story of Kitano and the town rather than the typical "protagonist-wants-to-be-the-strongest-bastard-in-the-whole-neighborhood/world" plot.
I don't know if it's the author's style or something but the author doesn't really use the common chibi or SD to emphasive funny scenes; you can't really know what to make out of a scene until you read the dialog.
As for the romance and slice of life part, I'm speechless. It's just pure brilliant. Excellent character development. Great scenarios. Chapters 76-78 are worth reading the whole manga for.
For it's plot though, it would have been great for a weekly digest, shame, it only ran in monthly. What I like about most in this manga is the concept of "the guardian of the school" which in the first half of the manga is defined to be simply the strongest bastard in the school. By the next half Kitano had redefined the term. Although not in physical appearance and strength; by heart, you could say that he really deserved the title more than anyone. Cheesy as it may sound, you can also learn a lot about this manga. I'm sure I did.
Although the ending was good, it's a shame though that this manga had to end so soon. But I'm also glad that the story didn't decline like most mainstream manga these days. This manga without a doubt deserves a 10.
