Sight-reading pieces become longer and longer as the grades go higher...

I know what music exams are. I've been playing piano for 3 years and I'm going to do the 6th grade AMEB exams next year in May ^^. So I'll be doing that in high school's 8th grade and that is a LONG time away so I don't worry about it.

I know, right? Exams are seriously nerve wracking-I was red in the face and couldn't sing my 4th grade exam aural thingo properly because my voice began squeaking and stuff = = (out of nervousness)

I never knew they graded you with distinctions and credits etc. My piano exams grades are always handed back to me by the examiner with As/Bs etc. The examiners don't talk to anyone (they don't talk to the teachers too), they just write their opinion onto the report card. It is great that you have the examiner gives positive comments on you!
I always get neutral opinions like:
'She is very enthusiastic' (as if!) and 'She must've tried very hard'. Zzzz...

I'm not sure about that either. None of my previous examiners in the past gave me any positive comments...They just pointed out my mistakes or stayed neutral...or was it that my playing never generated anything positive....=P I was quite surprised when she wrote in my bassoon exam commentary that I had potential. o.O When did I, all of the sudden, have potential? Or possibly my skills can vary with different instruments....??

If I can double post again, I just got back my piano exam results! ed with Merit 122 points!! Woo! So happy!

Updating on my progress...I'm working towards my grade 8 piano this year...

I don't really get the grades system, because we have a different one. In our country it's like that for instrumentalists:

U1 (the lowest) - U2 - M1 - M2 - O1 - O2 (the highest!!)

Each of those is an exam, but only the practical part, no theory
next week I'm going to take the M1-exam for the piano, however those exams make me always so nervous that my mind goes blanc and I mess up big time -___- I , but I'm always dissatisfied after it...
I can't wait for my exam yay irony >:-(

I'm sure you'll be fine! Trust me, the more you play in front of people, the more bolder and braver you'll get! This is talking from personal experience and the person performing for the first time totally stuffed up and had to do it again another day!! O.O

I guess I have played way too seldom in front of people. 🤣 I have always been busy finding a way to escape those occasions. Also, this was my last year at school, so there was hardly time. Okay, I often accompany our choir on the piano, but that's somewhat different from an exam...
Aaand I messed up. In the end I didn't -.- However, it's okay, since I ed my music exam for my school leaving exam. (that's more important to me^^)

Umm....If you get a diploma it means you're recognised as a musician. It means you can teach, perform professionally etc. In diploma, there's three levels so obviously, the higher the better.
Even if you get a diploma, everybody has different strengths and weaknesses so even if you obtained a diploma like the person next to you, you're both different but it means you've both achieved the same requirements needed. Do you get what I mean? Sorry, I can't explain well! >.<

I'm so sorry to hear that! But I hope that doesn't discourage you to keep on performing!

I i was taking my grade 3 piano exam (ABRSM)...

i was playing the first piece and the part where i had to cross hands i played one wrong note. Personally i think i was too tensed up or stressed at that time. I just snapped. Just stopped there.

I cried all the way through the exam and when i was out of the room because i knew my marks would be deducted by a lot. I got 20/30 for that piece. My other 2 were 27/30 and 28/30 i think.

But it's okay... it'll never happen again. Nowadays if i make a mistake i'll just continue playing no matter what happens. And at least i got a merit for that exam 😀

Good on ya! I sitting my grade 3 ABRSM exam....nothing special. I was just inexperienced. Gahh..I wanted to blame my teacher for not prepping me up properly for it. I was still young then so I had no idea it was to be that hard...!! And so I sucked, I just ed back then. Haha! You did so much better than I, even though you snapped mid way!
