In the course of ten years, our cell phones went from alarm-clock LED screens that willingly dropped a call faster you could blink, to computer replacing devices capable of... well, almost anything aside from hardcore gaming. Yet, in fucking FIFTY~SEVENTY years, my car has the same MPG(L) as it ever did. Actually, my parents told me that their 70's Nova SS had better gas mileage than their current vehicle.

You may not realise it, but fuel prices in the US are greatly divorced from the world market mainly because a huge amount of political effort goes into keeping it that way. The backlash if fuel prices ever adjusted to be closer to global averages terrifies all US politicians.

Yep. I'm also from the UK and I find it kind of creepy that it's so accepted for someone to openly bring their personal religious beliefs into politics. You can believe whatever you want (although Mormonism, Romney's religion, seems pretty wacky to me for a lot of reasons, mostly its racist, sexist and anti-gay teachings/history, and it vaguely discredits him in my eyes) but you can't bring it into politics and start pushing through legislation so that even atheists have to abide by the words of the religious texts you believe in.

Well, as a British person I'm not able to vote but, if I could, I'd go Obama. As a female and someone who identifies as bisexual, I just couldn't vote for Romney in good conscience if I were American, since he seems pretty set on destroying or blocking what I consider to be my rights as a modern human being (access to birth control, abortion, same-sex marriage etc.), not to mention what I think he'd do to the economy (screw over the poor). Thankfully I don't live in America so even if he gets in I'll be fine.

I've noticed this more and more this election (for every office that is opened this year), the adds are getting worse and worse. What is it going to be in 2016? "My opponent enjoys snorting p off of the breasts of his undocumented maid/love slave." Or, "my opponent sacrifices a child every week to ensure that the gods favor him in the election." I don't even want to vote this year. These are supposed to be representatives of the people, not complete douchebags.*

...because the president is not a king. His/her powers are limited by law and tradition. The political process is meant (as founded) to represent the people, not the other way around.

This is actually a very touchy complicated political, economic, military issue. For starters, petrol is sold on the globe market almost exclusively in US Dollars (changing with Russian production, banks converting to euro, etc.). Secondly, the United States purchases a very large quantity. Those two factors in and of themselves will effect price. IE bulk purchase allows individual units to be cheaper.

The United States almost produces something like 70% of its own petrol consumption. Again effecting price.

For the military effect you need to understand how the world econmy and especial fiat money works. More on this next.

Correct. However the polution created per gallon burned is significantly less. Weither or not thats a net savings for the envrioment when you consider the nesscary amonuts of fuel required to burn X # of miles, I havn't seen figures for. should the catalic converter and such be removed mpg improves.

Regardless. The US economy is tied into the oil market, and should oil no longer be traded in US Dollars it would have a HUGE impact on the purchasing power of the dollar. Its actually the Government (insert whatever joke you find applicable.) via policies on manaufacturing, requlations on emmisions, and automotive manufactures manipulation of patent law, that really is effecting mpg. for an example ethanol kills engines(thus all the advertisment on our gas cleans better), and reduces fuel effecieny. It also renders additives like accetone mute or inconsquentioal as fuel economy boosters(which in pure gasoline, with an enriched mix(more o2) and cooler air, is VERY effective. Can potential damage engine parts though.)

The argument that this President or that President was blocked by that or this congress is mute, Regardless of which way the party divide lies. Its an integeral part of the workings of US Government usally referred to as "Checks and Balances."

Given the choice, Obama. He isn't a saint but at least only the crazies are thinking the world is coming to the end now instead of everyone under the sun. Besides, imagining McCain getting into office just so that he goes and rehires a bunch of Bush's flunkeys for another term disgusted me. The thought that McCain could keel over and leave us with a President Palin would have made me flee to Canada.

On that note, even if Romney/Ryan isn't the Bush/Cheney again, he'll still have to staff the oval office full of the rejects from W's istration. Until that generation is retired, dead and/or gone, the GOP will never get my vote for president.

Obama. I'm by no means a democrat but I do not like anything Romney says. His stance on birth control and abortion is insulting. He doesn't like paying taxes. His stance on welfare is ridiculous (there is a reason people are on welfare). And the best he can do for jobs is drilling offshore oil? How does that help the non-science and business majors? Those jobs will only last a couple years at most anyway. Then, suddenly he's against gay marriage? Funny, a couple years ago, he was all for it. Then he's all for "let's not spend money" yet he plans to spend another trillion to overturn a supposed 3 trillion dollar healthcare reform? And frankly, his diplomatic and foreign relation skills are not recommendable.

They both suck. America is screwed. And there's almost no way America will break free of it's 2 party system, even if the 3r party tries to come up as it is doing now. It won't get press, and no one would know. Not only that, people are too blinded with stupid issues like marriage/gays/abortion to think about survivability of the country.

So again, we're screwed.
