Even though she's reporting that group to the publisher, thus bringing more attention to the scan world (which I'm sure they already have an eye on us), I don't get why you people are so mad at her. I mean... copyrights are copyrights. If people are actually scanning Tokyopop's of Viz's english manga and distributing them, it's illegal. That's what copyrights are for. To protect the ones who bought the rights to something. 3w3z3n

Her writing was rather... messy, but I believe she was ranting about people scanning the actual english books released by Tokyopop and Viz, than the people scanning/translating/editing original manga to english. Even though it stays "illegal" for licensed titles, it's more acceptable than to directly scan publisher's books.

And compare this to someone scanning books (not manga) of your favorite authors and distributing them freely, who that be alright? Would you be happy for your authors or mad at that person? Would you want that person to stop scanning those books? Of course, money retribution to the author isn't the same, but it doesn't matter how little the publishers or the authors are losing. Copyrights are copyrights and they own them.

Just take it as we took advantage of their "no action" for long enough and it's probably time for this privilege to be over.

That's the main reason why many scanners are dropping projects once they are licensed. However I think it's alright if it's Japanese, being translated and all even if it's licensed in America. Because there are a lot of people who can't buy it, like in most parts of the world, they cost ten times more, even if you buy it through Amazon or something.

Even if she was right or wrong, I think Tokyopop and Viz actually knew already. Because once you think about it, wouldn't have there been more people who noticed it, and report it to them? If they wanted to, they would have taken action already, like with Death Note anime.

hm I think so as well, but then again, if they do, why for fu** sake is narutofan still up and running?!

In that you mean you do visit the site, Narutofan, and you do read the scanlations, right? Dattebayo is the one who scanlates it, and Narutofan doesn't only hosts the manga, and anime. They also write the events in the world of Naruto, and have information about characters and such. And because that site is sooooo popular, Viz knows. They must know, but even like this, people still buy the original copies, and until the sales go down, I don't think it will bother Viz too much. It's just a hosting site.

I disagree with the girl who wrote these kinds of things to whoever she wrote them to. And yes, maybe Catchanscans was wrong to distribute the copies made by Viz and Tokyopop, but that doesn't mean that groups like Enchanting Scans would have to stop translating the licensed mangas that they do.

hm this whole thing reminds me of something else I don't really like... someone is updating mana information on this site with descriptions from tp, and somehow seeing that feels incredible wrong, at least he/she should take their time to rewrite them...

But there's already a summary. I credit that it's from TokyoPop's one and but putting a name on it, it's more obvious that the title is licensed since I think just about anyone that has read manga in North America knows, they are the biggest manga licensor along with Viz. I probably haven't been keeping up from them in of their business, but I think these two publishers are the ones that are in direct competition with each other and fight for the manga market.

Well isn't that more a case of the "lesser of two evils"? But really, under the law, it's not a difference. I guess the different between just scanning and scanslating is whether the copyright is being broken more locally with the licensed copy or with the copyrighted version from the other side of the world.

You make it sound like your announcing the death of scanslating. 🙄 If that day comes, I guess I'll have to live just with what my library has and have to fight for books with other readers, or just do without. Or resort to anime. The thing is, I'd think anime would get the axe first since ADV is going after at least pirates. Are fans that rip anime off DVDs probably lumped in there? Probably yeah since it's a loss sale even if the person ripping the stuff doesn't make copies and make money off it.

And I know someone that scanned TokyoPop's manga. It was a series that got licensed right before the last volume and actually wasn't the scans' quality were LQ (hard to read the text), but anyways... He told me he wrote a letter to them and their reply according to him was like 'do what you want'. 🤣 I find that so nuts that TokyoPop has such an okay attitude to it. I think ADV would have replied threatened a lawsuit of the person followed through. But just telling a teenager that's about 13 years old that should be enough to scare the person off).

I could be told complete lies by this person but then why tell me this story? It's not going to really save his butt if TokyoPop sues him. He said even after he stopped scanning (he scanned the books he wanted and then he was done), he kept the letter. So I believe there was nothing in that letter to scare the guy otherwise he wouldn't be doing anything that he's doing now concerning the manga scanslating community (it's really all not legal as several people have reminded us). Or there's believing there's no letter at all, as I've sort have mentioned. I still keep in with this person too.

Exactly. Viz responded to a friend of mine asking them if it was okay to scan their stuff in as well the exact same way. They really don't care as long as you're not scanning in their shit in order to make a profit off of it.

But you're all complaining about prices now...you guys need to think about just how shitty the manga licensing industry really is. Just how much is a translator being paid per page now, hmm? Forget the mangaka--they probably get a good chunk of money from the publisher already, not to mention they get a part-time job to help pay the bills. What about the poor people over here translating manga for you and getting paid squat to do it? 🙄

I was talking about scanning US publisher's books, not scanlating from original raws to english.

ok, i've kept quiet long enough. i wasn't going to reply because i thought it would make matters worse. but, the BS i've seen based on 1 person's MISINFORMATION is insane. you're all assuming i "ratted" on a scanlation group or will "rat" on them. all based on the very fisrt post in this thread. "I heard from a friend that svloyalty was nearly shut down because one person actually told on the forum to the hoster and not enough with that , she actually reported to the publishing company" that's a LIE. did i on their forum and make rude comments and "scold" them for having scans of a US published manga? YES. did i report them to the host? NO. i said i was GOING TO, but i didn't. did i "rat out" cat chan scans? HELL YES! do i regret it or am i ashamed of it? NO. she isn't scanlating. she's scanning the US published manga. i have the utmost respect for scanlators because they WORK. even if they do licensed manga. she didn't do anything except scan some manga. IMO, there is a line and she crossed it. in reply to the comment that i "run off to my mommy and daddy to buy my manga for me" I WORK MY A** OFF FOR MY MONEY! i have a job, i work and i spend my money on manga. for the people who live in other countries, i'm sorry it's a pain in the a** for you to get manga. for the people who just want their manga free, get a job! i'm not going to reply to all the BS i've seen in this thread. oh, and i didn't go looking for svloyalty or cat chan scans...they ANNOUNCED themselves on baka-updates! i'm just going to say that 1. what cat chan is doing is illegal and she obviously lives in the US otherwise she wouldn't hide from the publishers and thus she's BREAKING THE LAW! 2. cat chan is a COWARD and lazy to boot. 3. i'm not going out and reporting scanlators who're doing licensed manga, so get a grip yes i mean you Ochibichan 3. scanlators contribute amazingly to the manga community, scanner on the other hand are leeches on the a** of the manga community. my final words on the subject: if you're gonna do something as STUPID as scan and distribute manga in the country it's copyrighted and then turn around and ANNOUNCE it on something as publisc as baka-updates, you'd sure as hell better expect some sh*t to smack you in the face. now all of you stop your bloody whining and go find something constructive to do.

whoa....ok.....I sense much anger in you oh somerandomperson. Well I agree to a point that you have the right to be angry due to the misunderstanding and I apologize for that, but they weren't talking about you only; note the usage of "They" and "People".
I would get a job though...if I get the chance (final year of high school is busy busy busy). And I would buy manga....if they actually sold them here ><(there isn't really a wide variety to choose from...5 shelves at the most). And forget about buying online since I gotta have money to begin with.
Now....off to doing something constructive! Like my overdue essay for one >
