Although To-LOVE-Ru didn't have the greatest ending (or even story, in some people's opinions), Jump didn't drop the series due to low sales. The series ended due to the author's "personal circumstances". The "author" that Jump refers to is none other than Yabuki Kentaro, the artist of To-LOVE-Ru and the mangaka of Black Cat.

I first found information about this when reading character biographies on Wikipedia. Looking under Haruna's description, there's a reference to Kashiwagi Shiho. I didn't know who that was, so I used my trusty search engineering skills to look up the information. Kashiwagi Shiho, who was the mangaka of Cocoa!, happened to be Yabuki Kentaro's wife.

Of course, I first thought that if Kashiwagi demanded money, I assumed Yabuki plagiarized the look of Haruna from Kashiwagi, as both are mangakas. But, it was a normal action of a husband who bases one of his characters off of his wife. After their divorce, Kashiwagi apparently sues Yabuki for character rights and such. Yabuki gives in because he didn't want to expose such horribleness to his daughter.

Speaking of Yabuki's divorce and daughter, there's another segment to the situation. At one point, Kashiwagi disappeared with their daughter. According to the source below, Kashiwagi called when she was low on money, came back, stole Yabuki's credit card, and then files for divorce. To make matters even worse, Kashiwagi was cheating on Yabuki the entire time! In the end, although Yabuki loses a huge portion of his money, he got custody of his daughter. :-)

The scariest part to imagine is that Kashiwagi is supposed to resemble Haruna. I don't think anyone can imagine Haruna doing any of these things. To-LOVE-Ru doesn't really need too much bashing about the ending, I think. If I was Yabuki Kentaro, I'd want to end the series too. Considering Haruna would probably greatly remind him of his ex-wife.
