If you want to get tears going read New York New York

I cry a lot when reading this series, but the 4th (and final) volume always leaves me bawling. It's a sentimental ending rather than a tragic one.

Ani ga Nokoshita Koi no Yukue - Omegaverse, though it's very light on that aspect and mostly focuses on the grief/healing aspect.

given
Also focuses on someone healing from a massive trauma, though it is more light hearted than the first one. There are great moments of grieving and struggling with those emotions. I heavily recommend the anime, the music written for it got so beautifully.

Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu
I honestly can't recall this one well, so no guarantees on how sad it is. I do know that I gave it a good review, at least. It has more explicit trigger warnings.

Try these:

Paradise View (prequel - Kimi to Parade)
Ashita Shinu (anthology)

I know another one but I forget the title, it's a oneshot.

"Kaze to ki no uta" by Keiko Takemiya is a historical tragic manga set in late 1800s and it deals with homophobia, racism, classism, rape, pedophilia, grooming and hypocrisy in a realistic well-written manner.

"Marginal" by Moto Hagio is a sci-fi thriller manga with a bittersweet ending that deals with gender identity, gender roles, pregnancy, motherhood and bodily autonomy in a deep way.

"Onshitsu" by Moto Hagio is a melanchonic urban fantasy short story with an extremely bittersweet ending about the love triangle formed by two stepbrothers and a mysterious spirit.

"Zankoku na Kami ga Shihaisuru" by Moto Hagio is psychological thriller manga with an open ending that deals with abuse of any kinds in family, pedophilia, drug and sex addiction, depression, suicidal thoughts, dysfunctional relationships and trauma in a realistic way.

"Sakuragari" by Yuu Watase is a historical thriller manga set in 1920s (alias, Taisho Era) Japan with a bittersweet ending and its themes are dysfunctional families, childhood trauma, homophobia, social inequality, rape and toxic relationships and they are dealt realistically.

"Tokyo Babylon" by CLAMP is an urban fantasy manga with a tragic ending that deals with spirits and any kind of sorcery while exploring the darkest sides of '90s Japanese society.

"Mo dao zu shi" by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu is a dark fantasy xianxia novel with a bittersweet ending that shows the problems and damages created by social inequality, hypocrisy, cruelty, abuse of power, elitism, rumors, mob mentality, irrational hatred, bigotry, prejudice, discrimination, abuse and dysfunctional families realistically.

I don't think "RG Veda" by CLAMP can be considered a BL since one of the leads is genderless but I consider it a manga you could like because it's a high fantasy inspired by the Rig Veda and Hindu mythology where nothing is like what it seems at first glance and it has many tragic moments and a bittersweet ending that makes one reflect.

Not sure if you're interested in manhua, but a few possible recs:

  • 我在1999等你 - I didn't like this one a ton myself, but it's very popular.
  • 别忘了存档 is a fantasy that is surprisingly sad. It walks the boundary of not being super explicit about the pairing, though.

For me it's always "Life Senjou no Bokura".
https://mangaupdates.conexionsite.com/series/mlb2t1r/life-senjou-no-bokura.
I am crying just ing it, even though it's doesn't have a really sad ending. It just contains a characters's whole lives.

I second this. I always recommend Life Senjou no Bokura, for mangas that make you cry. I cried for days because it kept coming to mind after I finished it, and it’s the only one that’s ever moved me that much.

I was going to post the exact same titles in this thread, then I saw you said everything I wanted to say. I second these recommendations!

Great taste.
