Give me back my rest day! Argh, I know it's dark story but I can't really nail in my head the tragic ending. Still, I have to say this story is not that predictable for romance shoujo like many out there. The mangaka has good sense in storytelling even in her early works. I salute you sensei. R.I.P.

Ok, so I liked it, especially in the beginning. I got really absorbed into it by the 2nd or 3rd chapter and of course a lot of that is thanks to its nice artwork and main character wasn't a rich CEO or some other cliche. As the story progressed I did see some cliches pop up (like Gelda, she was so annoying, and the tomboy girlfriend was pretty naive and stupid sometimes too) but they were tolerable. 🙂 The plot moved pretty fast which is nice, I didn't feel like it dragged out that much.

The ending though... I'll just say it was abrupt and while I enjoyed the little twist, it was also confusing. Like "What just happened? Huh?? So he ____?" But oh well I guess the ending is still clear enough to be self-explanatory. Not the perfect ending but good endings are hard to pull off in general.

The reviewer before me was a little too harsh, I think... yeah the characterizations were 2D for the most part, but this was still a rather entertaining read. I would say anyone who enjoys bitterness in their relatively realistic thriller stories - with dashes of romance and drama - pick this up. It won't take up that much of your time anyway.

The ratings on BU are really high. It's is true that the artwork is good, but the history is dreadful. The mangaka takes serious topics way too lightly. I'm going to write down a lot of spoiler in the midst of my rant just below 🙂

Even before Kai starts his 'work' he pisses me off. But as the story goes, so many characters get screwed, stabbed and tell their tragedies that I almost forgot how Kai's character is nasty.
I don't really understand why in so many manhwa get perfect guy has to be a leader from a gang. Maybe is because he is way too young to be wealth by his own achievements, so he has to be from a rich family. But then again, just accepting the money from your parents without feeling pissed off about it is dorky. So, he has to run off to the streets, show his charismatic and yet fearful face, become the leader of all problematic kids around him and beat other gangs up. I don't understand why. Srly.
But this manhwa takes the cake. He doesn't just leaders his angst rich friends to fight other fight other kids who equally want to fight. He is not angst, not even angry, he is bored for Christ sake! And he doesn't beat boys that directly tell him they want to fight him, he shoots people he is told to. And he talks as if his boredom is an actual excuse for his deeds! Even if he was bullied by his family that lived in Korea, it's not like it was a daily thing (they did lived in Korea, far far away from New York, as they make pretty clear with the so repeated remark that Korea is at the 'other side of the world') and he had a lot of from his parents and sister. Before his suicide the mangaka exposes with all the words that what made him do all that was boredom.
Let's not forget his girlfriend that has a good upbringing and all and still doesn't feel that him killing people is nothing in sight of her love. Who cares about those people, right? It's not like she knew them or anything. She didn't know J.J's new father either but she felt bad for his death and even wanted to have gone to his funeral. But no problema with her boyfriend going psycho around.
It seems that the mangaka ends this work intending us not to think badly of Kai. And that's just absurd. She might have not gone in too deep in the plot, but that doesn't change the fact that Kai was a killer.

Didn't give a worst rating cause I do believe that the mangaka was naive.

BUT IT'S PRETTY AWESOME! @silent, I don't think she, the author, was implying that ALL mixes have issues, but she is implying that mixes do have struggles finding themselves and fitting in, and as well as orphan/foster children. Spike was a prefect example of it. He was Black and Korean two contrasting traits. The majority blacks will not accept him readily, and majority of the koreans will not too (talking from experience)

The thing that irked me about this manga was how the mangaka was bias, thinking that everybody who is of mixed blood is looked down upon and has issues. Maybe this is so in Korea, but in America it isn't as she portrayed it or at least not to that extent.

First I want to thank Evil Flowers for bringing this manga to us. I like how they are selective about the mangas/manhwas they work on and they pick projects much to my taste.

What I like about this manhwa is it is refreshing. It has a degree of maturity and slice of life component to it which makes it an enjoyable read. But as far as the story is concerned, it is not that good and when its over you really dont take much away from it. Its just a story about a few people in New York.

I like the characters in the story. Very real. Good art. Very realistic. All this makes it relatable.

Like I said in my header, it is worth a read but you forget about it the next day.

I think author was a bit hasty wraping up this story. I mean it got interesting in 4th vol, and this manga could be something big, but I don't know what to make of last volume.
I din't like Sunil. I mean she had character, and sometimes she was very powerfull, but author made her into somekind of damsel in distress.
But it had great characteres like Spike, for example. This is a 2nd manga where I wished the character was the main guy.
Too bad it was short. But I'm not complaining...much...

Eastcoast AKA Soul to Seoul - a US setting five-volume series ~ refuses to be categorised neatly and so, it has a bit of everything ~ shoujo, shounen ai, drama, comedy, slice of life and so on.

It doesn't have a clearly defined storyline as it largely revolves a cast of personalities including Korean immigrant Sunil; half-Korean half-American Kai, and Kai's best half-Korean and half-African American best friend Spike ~ but it keeps track of Kai's journey into the darkness and his eventual realisation of his actions have consequences that may deeply affect him and some people around him.

Although it seems this is Kai's story, almost every one of them has a story to tell. Some are told well and some aren't. Art work is decent and the storytelling is sometimes chaotic, but it fits in with the mood of the story well.

The ending isn't to my taste, but I feel it's painfully fitting. Make of this as you will.
