Description

Story about Makoto Osawa, a university student on the regatta (rowing) team. He and his friend have dominated the intercollegiate competition for the double scull. Along with his friend's girlfriend (and team manager) Misao , the team has dreams of participating in an Olympic competition. But his friend's death in a racing accident leaves Makoto broken up, and he has to deal with pulling himself together as well as facing the trials of love and friendship. 2td4q

Unexpetedly great

A great manga with a simple plot that's not very original but it's done well, great characters and interesting relationships, great romance, the main drawback is, it's length, it could have seriously done better with 10 extra chapters, the ending felt rushed.
What I found in Regatta is a serious contender of Adachi, that should say more than anything else.
The setting is similar as in many series of Adachi, Sports, a gifted guy, a woman the main char loves, something in the story that makes their relationship hard to approach, char development, romance development and plot development. The main differences are that regatta feels more mature, maybe because it's about adults rather than school students. Also, chars feel more realistic, they have complexes and burdens and are far from perfect.

I've read two stories of Hara Hidenori, (Fuyu Haniabi and this one) and it was similar experiences: the main plot line is about some kind of action stuff; here the rowing world and the way to the olimpics and in FH the battle of an actress and an almost retired boxer to make of their lifes something else in their respective fields (acting and boxing). But in both case the best pages were not about the action but about the romance.

Regatta is not mainly about the sport but instead about the relationship between tow rowers (one dead and the other alive) and her woman coach. We barely witness the last battle in the water, but that's because the heart of the story, namely, the will challenge and the fulfillment of a promise these three youngsters made to themselves are alredy solved when they are about to begin the final sport battle.

I think the fact that one of the main protagonists is death from the beginning provide certain weird effect on the story, but it was not a big deal to me. The characters are appealing and has well stablilshed goals and motivations, and their relationship certainly evolves in unspected ways.

The action is pretty good and the good art really helps in telling the battles and making of them a thrilling contests. But, to me the best part, and a reason to have this author among my favourites is his way to tell and develop the romanctic part. Here there are some golden pages; and by coincidence or not, they are in at the middle of the story, not at the end, in both cases: in Regatta and in FH.

Very light, refreshing and fun story. I give it a 9,5/10.

I had Regatta in my wish list for a long time, even before it began being scanlated. The synopsis appealed to me and now that it's over I really don't know what to think of it.
First of all the story felt too short, it definately needed more development and I felt robbed of the challenges Osawa should have faced, I wanted to see him actually winning in that final stage, not some rushed job to finish things up. The art, while not really bad, wasn't much to my liking either, but I didn't think it watered down the story. Then you have characters you think are going to play a major role only to end up getting nowhere pretty fast.
The romance was well done, as everyone was facing a shadow, how could osawa truly compete? Would he still keep loyal to his dead friend or finally move over? Would he keep on repressing his feelings and beat his former friend?
Regatta is good, it lacks a lot but it is good and tries to stay honest and truthful, it follows a certain core of characters and it truly builds on them. And it's pretty rare to see a manga about rowing, at least for me.
Read this one and enjoy it.
