Surprised me!

I would really rate this a 7.5/10, but anyways I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this story. I do think I much prefer season 1 and parts of season 2 to the third, but the ending still had me emotional. The beginning was truly captivating and the rest had me addicted enough to where I read everything in less than a day. Seriously, my eyes hurt because I have barely looked away from my phone.

My only reasons for not giving this story a 10/10 were that I think D was very underutilized as a character, he was honestly one of my favorites at the start and I was so ready to get to know about him more, but he started falling flat around the time that his story was revisited. Though I find the flashbacks of what happened to him very enlightening. That, and it had been very refreshing for a main character to have such interesting characterization, the dude was named a thug and hopeless and he was just trying to survive from an unknown attacker, but after a point in time Min’s internal conflict switched to mainly external conflicts. And well you know if I was in the same situation as him I probably would just be trying to survive too, but nonetheless although from the start he was always just trying to survive, we didn’t have anymore the same Min that people whispered about and who was kind of a loser, and it’s just what made him so unique as a main character. Because even though he was a loser, he was trying his hardest and he was still bright and active, but just a little misguided. And when his doppelgänger mentions all this and tries to take his place, it felt like the starting point of his character arc, and not to say he didn’t have one, but it would have made a better story if

Min struggled more with the realization that the other world suited him more and it had been more delved into that he was kind of losing his sense of identity, because these things were only briefly mentioned.

And lastly

I can accept the ending for June and D, but I really really wish some sort of other ending for them had come about too. Though I do also really like the realization that Min had when June had used him to drag D back to their world. Nearly felt like crying, because I just wanted them to be happy too and I know that June and D were never going to be happy the way they were. But again, I thought it was a super good point that June made when he said that no person can take any other person’s place and that he had his own responsibilities and he didn’t want Min to forget his brother. But still… I don’t know I’m conflicted. And one thing that someone said in the comments that makes a lot of sense, why didn’t June use the remaining DSLs or whatever to bring back a vaccine! Ok, his brother was dying and he was yes him back fast, gotcha, but he burned the devices and that was just a huge waste because that could have been very valuable for in the future if they needed something; like the damn vaccine!!!

But anyways, still greatly enjoyed this, and although I have a few gripes with it, like wishing for more depth with Min’s character and others, I do still think the characters were super well done and it was not just plot-driven. It’s worth your time too, and the author has some valuable things to say and messages he wanted to get across.

When I picked this webtoon the first time, I have only read the first season and I didn't have any desire for more. I was more enamored with your usual power fantasy transmigration/reincarnation opmcs, and Min is definitely not an op protagonist, even in later seasons (altough doing parkour gives him mad skills). The second time - I have to it, it's one of the best action/thriller webtoons out there, really thought through.

But! The problem also lies in the title - Parallel City gives a huge spoiler, that the doppelgangers are not clones, aliens or whatever, but people from different dimensions. And the first season is more slow burn mystery than an action flick - there is considerable build up to reveals, and it's better to read it all at once than in episodes. The format of the webtoon releasing weekly episodes didn't do this title justice.

But maaaaan, when the action scenes hit, they are superb. All the parkour is greatly done, we see all the moves very clearly and it's pretty realistic. There is a great twist at the end of season one (not spoilering this one), and the action and tension picks up in seasons two and three, right through the emotional climax.

I did mention earlier that we don't have opmc - Min is just normal teenager with love of parkour, many friends and no direction in life. He will go through hell and slowly grow up, but with him it's more like he becomes sharper and more focused, rather than changed completely. I like that there are no characters that feel like cardboard, all of them could tell you their own stories, all of them feel like someone you could meet. There are stakes attached to characters actions, the plot is consistent and just rifled with tension.

I could go on and on about this webtoon, since I have found a lot of fascinating stuff and characters here. But it's too long already, so I will end this saying that it is a great story, although not your usual escapis/fanficky one, so popular right now with webtoons. But give it a chance, especially now when it's completed.

Half of this is a zombie thingy and that just isn't my cup of tea. Also, knives seem really nerfed in this universe, practically impossible to die from a knife wound.

For the art: The action scenes in this are so well-choreographed and smooth, it’s amazing! The colors might be a bit more muted/dark in the beginning but I think it really fits the style and tone of the story. I also really like the way the characters are drawn.

For the story: this starts out as a story about doppelgängers, but that’s not all there is to it! Stay for the twist:

actually going to the second dimension of where the doppelgängers come from, where Min’s parkour skills really help with fighting off the undead and just as general survival skills . Other than just action, there are some laughs here and there and I really got attached to the characters and their backstories. It’s one of my top to-reads when it updates each week.

Ongoing, but have read the available chapters 3 times over. The character portrayal and development is outstanding. Not to mention the unique and aesthetically pleasing artwork. I cannot say enough about how much I love this. Riveting action and plot, it is perfect. Can't wait to see where it goes.
