"1999" is an angsty and widely varied series about a bunch of teenagers. One of them is the son of a drug lord and so as you can imagine, all sorts of shit goes down, surrounded by a backdrop of convoluted and fluctuating interpersonal relationships.

This is a plot heavy manga with some mildly-explicit sexual activity.

This plot takes a new twist to Romeo and Juliet's forbidden love. It's July 7th, 1999 in Shanghai and there are two gangs fighting for control. Only in the ceasefire zone do people live in peace. In a chance meeting Xiaoxue, who is part of the Toulon's gang, and Dawu, from the Xianglongji's gang meet by chance and without knowing they are enemies. In the heat of the moment Dawu takes him to a place he has the keys to in hopes Xiaoxue will him, but is turned down. With a simple kiss he leaves Dawu not knowing they will meet again, but in very different circumstances

I'm still so mad how that self center cruel mf yiyang got his happy ending after betrayed everyone and even killed how own band member ...
Anyway MIZUSHIRO Setona is one of my fav author and she never disappoint.

This is such an amazing Yaoi manga that is so much more than your standard sex scenes. Unlike most other reviewers, I thought the art was gorgeous, even in the 90's style, and matched the angsty feel of the manga very well. The way the mangaka drew their eyes conveyed so much emotion, especially when drawn across s. I had to it, it was difficult at times to tell which character was who, but you learn to pick it up after the first few chapters.

The love between the characters also came off as very pure. It was very touching, and from the beginning you know it won't be your run-on-the-mill-happily-ever-after ending. The ending caught me by surprise actually and what took place illustrates how strong their love is. I highly recommend this manga. It had been on my wishlist for three years - I wish I would've read this sooner!

First of all the art was terrible. To the point where I could barely tell who was who. There was only two people I was always able to tell who it was, and that was only because that person was the only one with that hair style/length.
The story was interesting enough that I put the bad art a side and kept reading, but the only thing that irked me was the only female character. I kept wanting her to die.
Again interesting enough, but to me started flaming out a bit in the end, and was mostly predictable at how the last dramatic scene was going to be.

If you can get the bad art, and one annoying character, than give it a shot.

Aaah I loved this. Their hidden relationship was so heartwrenching and gosh I loved every page of the manga. It was so fun and exciting to read~~ I just love this angsty story!

This was one heck of a story. In a good way of course. I wouldn't say the characters are promiscuous, but it's true that they did have intercourse with different partners over the span of the story. However, surprisingly, I only came up with this conclusion after having finished reading the whole manga. It seems that I was so engrossed with the story I didn't notice that fact at all. That's when I was suddenly hit with the realisation: The story-telling, character development, plot progress, ling, everything was done so well in this manga, one wouldn't even have time to look left and right to judge and comment at all. Despite the fact that the issues brought up in the story are quite heavy stuff, they were dealt with under real care and authenticity. I didn't have to cringe or feel sick because of the gore/blood/violence/sexuality like I sometimes do with other series. This truly is a sublime piece of work.

Normally I'd take much consideration about artwork into , but somehow the mid 90s' style of art in here feels strangely suitable for the story, and it's not like it's horrible in the first place. I used to avoid this mangaka due to my strong dislike for some of her later works, but I gotta say this manga, especially when it was written almost 2 decades ago, is freaking brilliant, not just for its genre but for the whole package.

I rarely give good critique and i can say that this is worth it!!!!!
If I have to say, no words can express how beautifully crafted this piece of work of art is.
It made me fall in love, happy, lonely, sad, angry just you name it..
It delivers all the emotions in me...
The bad art and cover of the manga didn't affect me at all because i felt the feelings the manga wants to convey.
The ending is not tragic at all and it gives you a hint of hope that things that may not be what you expect it to be..

I really truly love this manga and I will never forget this as long as i live!!!!

This is the modern Romeo and Juliet for you.

You can feel it. Yes, you can feel it. The pain and the joy of the main characters. The storyline is wonderful. Bitter and sweetness mix together until the end. However, it does have some thing brighter than the classic Romeo and Juliet as it did tell you about a happy possibility (what i doubt that it 's not possible). You better prepare before you read this and for those who had already experienced Banana Fish this is something that may be in the same level.

As expected from Mizushiro Setona, this manga is another one of the her great works. She is skilled in story telling; the readers can empathise with the two protagonists and experience the emotions that they went through. This is definitely a good read for anyone who can tolerate a subpar art standard.

Beautiful written story about a tragic love, but ain't those not the best ones? (^~^)

I was not expecting this manga to be this good. Normally I am hooked from the very beginning, but with this I hadn't realized I was hooked until half way through. It's got great pace; even though it is slow, it gradually builds up and always makes the reader anticipating what is happening next. It's not one of those manga with dramatic moments, but has good flow between lows and highs.

Highly recommended. Great art as well - albeit a bit confusing, but as long as you take time to actually look at the characters, it shouldn't be so hard.

I was put off by the art at first but after reading just a few chapters, I had already fallen in love with the story that the art just didn't matter.
Like many before me have mentioned, it's kind of like Romeo and Juliet
but I think this was so much more touching and tragic.
The ending was both sad and almost happy.
I loved both the main couple and all the side pairings
Definitely worth your time to read!
