This is such a good manga. Yeah, it’s typical shojo , but a good comic regardless. My only complaint is I wish it would of continued a bit after they started dating. I hate when romance ends right after the confession. I also didn’t like how the side characters from the first half just vanished.

Manga devolved in the second half

I thought this manga started off with a somewhat unique, innocent charm to it. The main female lead is an unattractive and awkward girl who falls in love with a considerate, handsome boy. I thought their friendship was cute and even his

rejection of her confession was very honorable and adorable in of itself. Everything was very likable about the first half, from the "love rival" to her friendship. I liked it for what it was: innocent and lighthearted.

Once she graduates from middle school and enters high school, however, the manga devolves into a cliche shoujo story. I don't know why the author didn't keep the charm of the first half and decided to muddy the story with cliche plot points and dialogues.

She reunites with the bench guy and he has turned into an arrogant playboy. The "playboy", as you can probably guess by now, is putting on some sort of act to hide his pain of a broken home, which of course our female lead picks up on and puts up with.

And then predictably, she falls in love with him.

I think second half would have been more tolerable if the bench guy wasn't so terrible to Meguro, and Meguro's personality didn't change so much.

It started off with great potential and then the quality slid.

I've been reading manga for years and my sole focus were only shoujo and yaoi...
But lately I've gotten tired of reading shoujo because the heroines had been following the stereotypical trend. Either the complete idiot and helpless girl but has all the boys fall in love with her OR the I can do anything even if it's impossible girl...

But this manga proved me wrong... It break out all those shoujo cliche that I've known...
â€¢ The heroine is not like the super girl in most manga but she gave effort to change herself for the better and that's why I really love her...
â€¢ The transformation of the heroine in of looks and personality is close to reality and not over the top where in most manga they just change overnight...
â€¢ The male interests are also very realistic and not the type were they would fall in love with the heroine half hazardly just because she is the MC...
â€¢ I also like how the heroine cherish her friends and not compromise them over love...
â€¢ This is also the first time that I've liked a hateful rival....

Overall I had fun, cried, empathize, laugh... In short I've experienced different emotions while reading this manga...
I'm not exaggerating but this is by far my favorite shoujo manga!!!
Whoever Miho chose in the end, I will never object...
Ganbatte Miho...

P.S.
The cover maybe a bit unappealing to some people but don't be fooled by it..
Believe me this manga is worth reading!!!!!

I can't stop loving the story

I absolutely love how the story progresses, even in the less happy parts there's still hope for Meguro. With every new event the story has much more potential to create newer better events. I've never truly loved reading a romance manga this much, even when it isn't lovey dovey at the moment it still makes me excited to read it. My favorite part about the entire story is how there's more after middle school for her. Meguro's character just makes me excited to see her mature and even as just a reader I feel proud of how far she has already gotten and has yet to go.

Has a strong first half, but ultimately doesn't stick the landing

The first half is good and actually pretty novel for a shoujo manga with a school setting. The second half though... ehhhhh. This manga starts off bucking shoujo manga trends only to more or less conform to them as the story goes on. To make things worse, you know those the side characters that you got invested in during the first half? Well, they're not really important now and they don't even get mentioned that much during the second half. The whole thing leaves you feeling a bit cheated.

I don't think the second half is bad, but it's just not as good as the first. About the only good thing about the second half is that Mito starts growing more of a backbone, but I'm not sure it's worth reading just for that. Honestly, I'd recommend reading until Mito graduates from middle school and then pretending that's how the manga ends.

Main character growth
Her looks are improving bit by bit and she is actually UGLY.
A gay character!
The bullies and rivals are not too extreme.
Her love interest is compatible with her.
Good lessons about friendship, love and feeling good about
yourself but are not too cliche.

Her high school love interest, I mean c'mon it's 2016, can't we
get past of "I hate that guy but I love him" -romance?

OTHER:
I wish her personality won't drift too much from honest and hardworking
and true to her feelings to ---> artificial, childish and pretentious and
basic shoujo main character b*tch.

This manga has elements of Watamote, Switch girl and Peach girl.
For now, I would recommend it.

Edit: Well, what do you know, switch girl is from the same author lol

at first it was kinda hard for me to finish earlier chapters but thankfully i keep reading it since it is really good. and just like the other commenters say, it is a fresh plot compare to another shoujo manga that released lately. (not to say the other shoujo mangas were bad, but yeah after years of reading shoujo, i am being picky to pick my read) and without realize it, i was crying at a scene on this manga, something that was rarely happen for me (or maybe i just became old XD)

Updating My Review & Rating A Bit

[I tried keeping this fairly spoiler-free by only hinting at parts of the story.]

As I stated in my past version of this review, the series is cute and the characters are fairly likable.

The middle school arc makes this series shine. After Mito started high school, however, the series is taking a big nose dive for me with a cliche love interest and some background characters that aren't doing any good for the plot so far.

I think one of my biggest issues is what lamansonbleue stated in a newer review above mine. I'm almost certain it's just bad translating for the English version of the series (I can't say for certain since I haven't read the original Japanese version) but Mito's personality doesn't match her dialogue when she gets uncomfortable. It makes her come off as bipolar.

Right now I just feel like I'm reading this story to finish it but I hope it picks up the charm it used to have in the middle school part of the story.

Character Growth

So far I really like the way this manga portrays the main character. She struggles with insecurity, for good reason too! She is not conventionally attractive. But through the manga you see her grow as a person- she becomes more confident, more assertive, a better friend, and tries to improve herself aesthetically as well. Its not a magical transformation that happens over night, but a struggle and that leads to gradual and irable development.
