Description

Wow! First thing I noticed is that this manga has intense cohesion problems! The dialogues didn't make any sense at parts and I had to re-read the same page a lot of times before I could go to the next one...they were really confusing and didn't seem to have a connection between them. Also, some parts of the story are even wrong because of that, though, as @pleochroic said, I don’t know if it’s because of the translation or not. For instance: at first Sudou says he's bisexual, then later on says it's his first time with a man; conflicts regarding the girls Sudou slept with are really confusing.

You know, this manga isn't particularly good, but it isn’t particularly bad either. It has everything I like in yaoi together: a promiscuous and troubled uke, a seme who can't help being attracted by the uke, really spicy dialogues (such as the "animal in heat" sentence Sudou uses to get Hirokawa's attention, super hot!) and a character who's shut down to another, which makes him fall in love with this character. So, how could I not like it?
On the other hand, it doesn’t come together as a whole. To me it should have been a one-shot and that's it. The rest was just a drag-on. First of all, it doesn't have much of a plot, really. I goes round and round on the dating versus one-night-stand thing, and though I understand the concept of it, it just doesn’t convince me enough to care. It seems to revolve around things that are already solved. Like, if Hirokawa said he was Sudou's boyfriend since about the first time they had sex, why did they keep fighting over it? I, for one, don’t think the ex girlfriend or Hirokawa were at fault. I think Sudou was just crazily insecure. She didn’t make anything remotely close to a move on her ex, so I couldn’t understand Sudou’s bitching.

Then again, I think the whole portrait of Sudou was confusing. Konno-sensei wanted to make him a nice guy who's been alone his whole life and, therefore, got a little too excited when he could. He tried dating, but since it didn't work, he was pissed and slept around a little. Seeing there was gossip going around that he was promiscuous, he concurred to that idea and said it was true, said he slept with everybody. I repeat: that’s what Konno-sensei wanted to portrait.. She didn’t.
Also, the woman involver are at fault too so I don't understand why they judge Sudou so much. If he wants to sleep around, it's his problem, isn't it?

The categories here are wrong, too. How is the seme straight? He's been attracted to the uke since he laid eyes on him. Also, he's the one who turns all crazily flamboyant at the end. To me, Sudou's much "straighter" than Hirokawa, since he's the one getting all the confused feelings and Hirokawa's just fine with it from the beginning.

Why I do like about this manga is that they date in a natural process. Not only about sex, like some out there. They meet each other's friends, go out together, talk about work and have sex. A normal relationship. The only part I thought was unnecessary was the last one, about their daily lives. Yeah, it was cute, but so what? I know it's supposed to make the reader feel like they've been together forever and that it's sweet, but I guess I just don't like the funny bits.
Also, I can't hate it because it has some catch phrases that just...caught me xD No, really, they are beautiful and make me smile.

Also, I’ve always really liked Konno-sensei's artwork, so I can't criticize that at all. I love the characters' faces and bodies, they are very sexy. I love every single drawing.

i don't understand these characters. i don't know how much of it is the translation; it doesn't flow in english, but i have no idea whether it is the same in japanese. and the art is no help. in any case, they say some really strange things at various points in their growing relationship, and i couldn't make heads or tails of it.

they also DO some strange things, and that's not the translation. frex through the entire manga hirokawa is portrayed as the cool guy who is more mature and has a lot more relationship experience than sudou (which is also borne out by hirokawa being friends with an ex, while sudou's exes all hate him). so what the heck is it with hirokawa bringing shinobu along to the street concert, and then just leaving with her without a word to sudou? who the heck does this sort of stupid thing when trying to start a relationship with somebody else? i'm all for being friends, and my friends are as important to me as my lovers, and yeah, i have remained friends with most of my lovers. but ghods, guys, timing matters. you don't parade your friendly exes in front of the gunshy would-be lover -- and then you don't even realise what's happening? for me this level of clueless faux pas didn't fit with hirokawa's character. sudou also does some strange things that don't make sense to me. i think this is what @voraciouszest considers two-dimensional; i didn't think they were quite that flat, but they were also not fully realised. 2.5-dimensional, grin.

i didn't feel the love. not even from sudou's side, but especially not from hirokawa's. which means this whole story didn't work for me; i didn't really care about their relationship. that said, it's still better than the vast majority of BL out there (what a sad state of affairs). and the art is as always, very competent -- i am liking it more and more. konno's grasp of anatomy is a joy in the sex scenes, and she doesn't use the same boring positions over and over. but i don't know whether i would recommend this to anyone who's not already a fan.

I saw the devotion and change that came over suou after he met Hirokawa . but i didnt feel like Hirokawa ever really commited himself to sudou fully. Also, what was up with Hirokawa's ex-lover wanting to meet Sudou? i didnt really like her and didnt understand her purpose in this story. even though it didnt feel like Hirokawa was doing it on purpose i felt like he spent the whole manga rubbing it in Sudous face that Shinono is his ex lover, why would an ex lover want to hang out with an exs new lover? it was kinda weird.

Kimi no Na wa Star is not my favourite work by Konno Keiko, but it's still enjoyable. The characters somewhat spoil her usual storytelling atmosphere in this volume. Both Hirokawa and Sudou appear to be two-dimensional. It was not my expectation to see them as complicated, realistic beings. But in the end, they still fail to grasp your attention like Konno's other characters have done before.
That being said, Kimi no Na wa Star is still an enjoyable volume of work. The art is clean and unique and the storyline, while far from great, is still enough to keep you reading. Any fan of Konno Keiko will choose to read this series regardless of what is said, but for those of you who haven't experienced her work - Take a shot at it.
Though all aspects don't particularly come together and make the series whole, there are several different facets which will encourage you to enjoy the story. In the end, you will either appreciate the characters or find other aspects of the volume worthwhile.
