Description

The Song Princess possesses the power to protect the kingdom with her song. Not Well Explained

Don't get me wrong, it's a good story seeing as it's almost all flashback, but it needed more world building to fully satisfy me and one volume can't really do that. I wanted more of an explanation as to what the songs actually did, the political situation with the king's successor, the implications of a female king or male song princess, etc. Five chapters just explained their short story and not anything beyond. So good but simple and limited.

I'm mostly into Seinen and can't tolerate the naivety of shounen let alone shoujo
yet this one was such a good written story that I had to check if it wasn't Josei
granted not too mature but still written for a mature readership

I personally really liked it 😀 Aki gives a new perspective to manga in a literature like way.

There were two things that surprised me: First was being that Utahime was started in media res [like in Aki's other manga Olimpos], which is really rare even in books, much less manga. It was a really unique approach that provoked my interests. In addition, Aki tackles the plot in another interesting way: she tells the ending of the story, Maria's death, early in the story. This is also not common in manga, however, it's fairly prevalent in famous classical literature such as Shakespearian plays, where the author tells the audience how the story will end in the beginning in order to help the reader understand the content of the story better. This makes me think that Aki might have had some experience in a literature major of some sort... :3

Utahime definitely doesn't seem as deep as other Aki works such as A*D or Olimpos at first, but as a reader, you really need to look deep into the details and actually think about what's going on. The hints are very subtle, so you might have to read it several times to get the actual meaning of the story. And did I mention the art is great?? A lack of details in the background as usual of Aki, but it's still great!

The only problems I'd say are the lack in background detail and Cain's personality D: [I actually liked Maria's personality more; kinda like having a dark side or imperfections with complex feelings. She's pretty much the equivalent to a femme fatal.] Cain's is a bit trite: really lucky and smart bishounen who cares for his sister very much etc etc...

But I really recommend Utahime for people who want to read something different as well as someone who wants to start reading Aki's manga [considering Utahime is the most easy to understand after Hanamatsuri].

It’s quite strange that even though we know how the story will end we still get very caught up with the characters and the story, and that really shows the talent of the mangaka!

Plot- The plot is quite nice but as it is it’s a bit lacking. It’s very condensed and some things aren’t explained, or are explained very little. And while the plot was good it could have been formatted differently to capture the readers attention better.

Like we shouldn’t have found out that the sister died in the first chapter because it sort of took away that suspense during the later chapters because we know she died

Characters- The characters are all nice and distinct but pretty well fleshed out during the short story. You came to really like all the characters and even though you knew how the story would end you still really got caught up with the character, making the ending still very sad.

Art- The art is quite nice, and really fits the manga’s tone.

Other- This story so could have been longer, if only to explain some things that weren’t. As it stands now it’s still a very sad and enjoyable read, though a little dialog heavy. I recommend the story.

7/10 – Really liked it

Haven't read a manga that felt so "complete" in a long time. And, its only 1 volume! The plot is intriguing and well thought- out. You can see that the mangaka had a clear idea in his/her mind in the way the story is presented. But the bulk of the story lies on the characters, and it's their interactions which make the story charming. Aki’s artwork is as enjoyable and atmospheric as her story, with a style that’s brimming with subtle emotions and attractive character designs.

My main gripe is that the story feels too condensed (text heavy) and that Cain's character/background wasn't developed as well as the others. For me, the dynamic between Maria and Thomas was more compelling than Cain fleeing his destiny. Overall, it was a welcoming read.

Great storyline. Even with only one volume, it was able to flesh out Cain, Maria, and Thomas' story. Everyone's such a great character, even the embittered mother. Wished to have seen more of them.

What I didn't like was it didn't explain how exactly the song princess' inborn talent protected and helped the King.

And either not well written or not well translated by DMP? Awesome concept, poorly done. It seems jumbled and I'm not sure if it realizes some of the things it's informing its readers of.

I think Ill go get it. It really seems like a good manga. But has anyone seen the resemblance of Cain to Vocaloid Kaito?(google him if you dont know who he is)

This is one of the most beautiful one shots I've ever read. The story is set like a fairytale, and every character's emotions are very realistic. Everyone had flaws and was selfish at one point (I don't get why all the Maria hate, her mother and Cain were being pretty selfish too - not to mention the town's people ^^; Maria was as much of a victim as she was guilty) but they did make up for that. They were all very humans, and the ending was super bittersweet. A true lovely story - people shouldn't judge it because it was labeled as "shoujo". It's a genre I particularly dislike, since it tends on dwelling in unrealistic romances, but the story here wasn't about romance, it was about, well, people, with all their flaws and all they have to make up for it.

I also wish it was a bit longer. I wanted to know about things that happened after, about the female king and what Cain intends to do from here on out. I thought it was a very unique story and I loved the art. Nice lines, detailed work, and pretty people. 😀

I do it, I dislike the thoughts and intentions committed by Cain's sister, Maria, but I think it helped flesh out her character and show that ugly thoughts surface in us all--we just don't like showing it. If she had been yet ANOTHER Mary-Sue, I would have given up on this story instantly. This story was more down-to-earth and filled with realistic emotions. It portrayed Maria's human side. We all harbor selfishness and even if we hate to it it, we have similar thoughts. Also, we need to take her situation into . She was brought up being protected by everyone, being looked after and cared for like a real princess, so it reflects her selfish nature. I think a character like that is needed to diversify a well-written story.

I can't say Cain's attitude was much better either. Knowing the dire situation that came up, he was still reluctant on returning. He was running away from his problems and it resulted in an irreversible situation.

Overall, I do hope Aki creates more wonderful stories such as this.
