Description

Nikotama Souhei is transferring to a new school and vows to enjoy a new life, living a lifestyle true to herself. Adopting the name Sara, she, a transgender girl, heads to school in a girls' uniform, ready to grab life by the nads and twist. Sara's no pushover: bright, hyper and kind. She is like nothing anyone at the school has ever encountered, and faces hardships regarding her gender identity. Seriously... have people never heard of trans people? Or are they just so transphobic, that they have to display their hatred everywhere. I just hope, since many of these comments are quite old, that the people who wrote them grew up and are now less hateful.

The story may be a bit unrealistic, but so are many shoujo manga. In general, it displays some of the struggles a trans girl experiences early in their live. The family, who won't accept them, people telling them, that they are still a dude etc. It's sad but something that is really common when ur trans.
If u want a light read that isn't AS cruel as the real world but still shows some of the many struggles, this is something you can surely read. It may not be a masterpiece but it still isn't bad.

While I understand that this is a manga and a light hearted one at that, I cannot recommend it due to the unrealistic view it gives on the experience a young transgender girl would face while in high school. I thought it was mildly transphobic, (though not as transphobic as some of the other comments on here,) and I didn't get very far into it because I felt that the way she was depicted was offensive and unrealistic. I have been looking for LGBT+ friendly literature recently, and am finding it very difficult, especially among manga to find ones that aren't homophobic, or transphobic in some way, even within their genres.

I read heterosexual romance 98% of the time and I wasn't expecting transgender story when I randomly picked this up. I'm not really sure I could consider this the same as all the other 'straight' manga I read but it was good nevertheless. Regardless of genre and category I think the manga did a good job of portraying "loving someone for what's inside and not out."

I was expecting an exciting genderbender where a boy would fall in love with another who liked to crossdress, and they'd be lovers as two boys (not as a boy and a girl), but instead I got an extremely unrealistic and confusing story with zero re-read value.

The main lead character Sara actually annoyed me with her bratty personality, and the fact that she never listened to her mother just worsened it all. I can't stand bratty characters.

The reason this manga irks my very being is because this is boys' love, yet it managed to act exactly like a generic shoujo romance. I recommend this to anyone who's in the mood for a peculiar genderbender, but I can promise you that it probably isn't worth your time anyway.

Although the idea is interesting, the narrative structure made it almost unreadable. There was little to no lead-up or explanation to random events happening, and it would jump forward through time without warning. I really can't give this a good rating or recommend it, the structure was so nonsensical that it didn't make any sense... it felt like there were multiple pages missing between each page. But if you do decide to read it, the characters are fun at least.

If you are looking for a serious, mature and sophisticated manga dealing with cross gender identity issues, check out Claudine (highly recommended) by Year 24 mangaka Ikeda Riyoko.

That said, this one is excellent if you just want an adorable, happy, unapologetic Anne-of-green-gables type character who, although seemingly simple, is maybe just bang-on about life. "If you hate yourself you'll make your whole image seem muddy, but if you like yourself, you'll be able to shine...It's wonderful to like yourself, isn't it?" Maybe it is a lot simpler than we psycho-analyzers think it is...

The Plot and Characters
The story itself is simplistic, as are all the characters. Big serious issues are left un-addressed and strangely accepted. Regardless, I thought the plotting was well done; it never promised to take itself too seriously, and it kept true to that for the majority of its telling with feel-good simplicity.

Naruse, and his entering into a 'brave new world' as he tried to understand his feelings toward her was a like-able, idealized partner for Sara. The mother was one of the most unlike-able characters I have ever read. She was over-simplified and fairly one-dimensional, but the essence of selfishness behind her character came through. If she was for comedic purposes, it didn't work; it only made me sad. But since the primary purpose of this story seemed to be feel-good, flowers and sunshine with a tiny side order of extremely simplified and idealized--gender identity issues, I can forgive the foibles of the mother's character.

The Art
Bright, clean, round-lined, vibrant and uncluttered art: the backgrounds are kept minimal and the characters dominate the s. Everything moves as it should and the delivery, for the most part, was easy and natural to follow from frame to frame.

Problems
The story occasionally began to promise something more realistic and meaningful, and I felt slightly insulted with the results handed to me. Second, Sara's dialogue was in cutsey third person narration when speaking about herself; surprisingly, I wasn't annoyed by her indomitable cheerfulness; only her dumbed down voice. I suppose that was the 'type' of girl she felt right with. Finally, two of the friends, one being a main character, looked too similar, thus creating a clunky confusion factor in several important scenes.

If Sara is a woman in a man's body then I'm a god trapped in a mortal's body.

I can tell you right now, there's absolutely no way you can argue that I'm wrong without itting that Sara is just a man dressed as a woman. Just because you can think like a woman and act like a woman doesn't make you a woman. If you're born a man, then like it or not, you're a man. Just like, if you're born white, then no matter how black you think you are, you're still white. You can dye your hair purple but that doesn't change the fact it's still dyed.

Furthermore, if a man were turned into a woman (I don't care how; magic, genetics, whatever, so long as the person is completely physically changed-as in, can have babies and the full nine yards). Then that man is now a woman, NOT a man trapped in a woman's body. In this case, you really can judge a book by it's cover. I wont lie though. If I were turned into a woman, I wouldn't change my tastes just because I was changed physically. We are who we are based on our experiences, yes but we're also who we are physically. A person who believes they're a woman with the body of a man is just that; a man who thinks he is a woman.

People who find transvestites interesting will possibly like this manga because it's one of the rare few written about a transvestite. However, you'll probably find stories about transvestites written by real transvestites more interesting.

People who were looking for a normal person suddenly thrust into an identity crisis over some dramatic physical transformation will not like this manga. In fact, this manga even fails at creating an interesting love story.

the art was good but i didnt really care for the characters or the story. the guy is gay if he falls for a guy that looks like a girl but know its a guy. i wouldve liked it better if it was just plain ol yaoi because a real man with a real man is sooo much better that a man with another man who wants to be a woman. in the end the d!ck is stuck in the same place anyway so it dont matter.

I was impressed. Not only did I enjoy how cute it was, but the story was wonderfully told. Yes it was short and I would've loved to see a continuation of everyones' stories, but it was definitely worth reading.

UPDATE:
....hmmm sleepless_sin...... yeah we all know it is stuck in the same place, but its not about that. A story about an individual who is transgender is completely different then just saying both are gay and accepting of that. There is more to it then that, you can't really define it in such simple .
