Pretty average.

I found this pretty average. It's not terrible, but there's nothing exciting about it either, whether it's the art, story or characters. I've never been much of a fan of Nakahara Aya's art style and this is one of her earliest works before it became more polished later, so needless to say I didn't really like it. But this is really a matter of personal taste.

Misora is the typical dumb, hard-headed girl who gets atrocious marks but managed to fluke her way into a prestigious high school anyway. Kaji is the typical shoujo manga male lead who's permanently rude to the girl, even though he's supposed to like her. I find this setup incredibly frustrating; I just can't stand seeing girls throw themselves at the feet of guys and voice their affection over and over again despite his repeated rejections. You can usually look forward to the moment when the male lead's cold jerk exterior finally cracks and he reveals his feelings for the girl, but here we don't get that satisfaction. Kaji doesn't even manage to spit it out until the very end. What very, very little he does along the way (e.g. he once stood up for her in front of the teacher) is done with a "you owe me now, you annoying pain in the butt" manner, which doesn't do anything to redeem him. Misora notes earlier on that he's just masking his embarrassment behind these rude words, but I don't see how it makes it any better. It's just irritating.

There's nothing unusual about the story - a couple studies together and fall in love, some rivals pop in briefly and zoom out again because they fall for someone else, parents appear to provide one last obstacle at the end. It's okay, but it's not executed in a particularly interesting way.

Very typical of the genre, so it was nothing great for me. Those who like the genre and sensei's other work will totally love this one though. The art is of course dated, but not too bad.

Not too memorable, but cute, pleasant, mildly funny. But for Nakahara first-timers, just pick Lovely Complex.

I respectfully disagree with Posh here ^^;;.
It's not one of the better works by Nakahara-sensei, but definitely it doesn't deserves a 1 ^^;;. If the comedy and the sorta slapstick bits are not your cup of tea, fine, but other than personal taste there aren't such structural flaws to warrant a 1 IMO.
Whatever. The boy is a male tsundere, take it or leave it. He's loud and brash and basically never grew up with female childhood friends/relations his age, or under 60, but at his core is a good boy. Just a bit rough around the hedges and exaggerated in his reactions for comedy purposes. As the female protagonist realized at one moment, for him it's a question of embarassment management more than anger. He attacks because he feels pretty vulnerable, especially -guess what? - when he's around her, a bit like a little kid.
The girl just complements him with her softer attitude and she carries both her heart and her teardrops on her sleeves, but she can deliver the occasional killer head-smash 😛 .
It's nothing revolutionary on the whole and Nakahara is still a pretty green author at this point (hence subjected to possibly quite a lot of editor's tampering story- and characters-wise), but there are already some little hints here and there of the brilliance she would display full power in Lovely Complex 😀 .

i've only been able to read a manga and get past the first chapter from below year 2000 once, with this it's twice 😀
i'm looking forward to more releases
i didn't think it'd be this good 🙂
