confusing and interesting

there's some jokes that just does not make sense, there's joke that got to you after mulling it over for several seconds and there's some that you get immediately that make you laugh. it all depends, it is deliberately confusing but i love the art style and the idea and message behind it. no harm in picking this one volume manga, as long as you don't mind scat and gore.

This is one of the strangest manga I've ever read...and I love it! It's really a gem and worth a lot more than the time it takes to read it. I love the strange perspectives, the humour, the art styles...everything. Really, the only fault I can think of isn't even with the work itself but that the scanalation I read had most of the pages out of order. I'm planning on buying this thing ASAP.

If you've got a thing for the weird, unusual and unique (as I do), I sincerely recommend this work. 🙂

Oh my god, this is the funniest thing I have ever read. The s of classic art figures, looking very serious and whatever is coming out of their mouths....

anyway, theres a bunch of not-so-funny s, maybe I didn't get it but half of them are boring or don't make sense. Sometimes his humor just doesn't work, but there are a few gems in this mass of mostly unrelated s. . If you like 'sick' things read this because it has incest, homosexuality, and murder, and sometimes at the same time. i get all squicky when i read stuff like that so if you're like me you'll enjoy it. 🙂

It's yonkoma. Believe it or not.

It's his first manga and with that, I applaud him for originality (I understand previous commenter's way, but within Japan this is somewhat of a really fresh material to take) and such ways of taking it. The fourth wall breaking sequences are funny, the references are rather old, but he took the classics and put it beyond common conception.

It's rather NSFW; but not in a porn kind of way; It's like seeing relics of fornication, If you know what I mean.

This manga is delightfully funny, and the amount of thought that the mangaka put into his parodies is irable. There are a lot of spoofs of not only easily recognizable Western figures and Renaissance paintings, but also references to classic Japanese manga. No, I'm not talking about the Doraemon reference, I'm talking about stuff like the Screw-Style reference. The Western parodies were decent, of course, but it was the casual mockery of Japanese culture and Japanese norms that made this manga so enjoyable to read.

This is definitely not something you want to read if you are new to reading manga. There are so many hints and references that you would probably miss if you aren't familiar with certain aspects of Japanese pop culture and history. You also need basic knowledge of religion and European art history. Finally, you need to have a sense of humor and to not take this manga too seriously. It's literally page after page of gags.

My only criticism is that the English scanlation was absolutely painful to read. The manga is read from right to left, but the scanlator typeset the English text vertically from left to right. So your eyes are bouncing back and forth across the page trying to decipher the dialogue letter by letter. A good rule of thumb is to NOT typeset more than a single line of vertical English text in a manga. With photoshop, it is very easy to expand the dialogue box to allow better position of horizontal English text. (The translation itself seems good though.)

Anyway, highly recommended manga (unless you are new)!

Palepoli really reminds me of the underground comics found in North America in the 50's, 60's and early 70's. It attempts to challenge sacred cows and conventional mores with sacrilegious, grotesque and taboo topics and imagery.
Now this approach would have been groundbreaking forty or fifty years ago, but it's now a tired well worn path, traversed by hundreds of others who did it far better. Furthermore Palepoli often seems pedantic; as if it was written by a precocious teenager who thought shock and iconoclasm alone were superior positions to talented exposition, narrative and the merit of a subject.
However, it does try very hard to challenge and seems earnest in its attempt to be socially relevant.
