That said, "chessmaster" in this instance refers to the chessmaster type character as outlined at TV Tropes.

I'd like to see a romance with one, even if it's a one-sided romance, because usually when I've seen Chessmasters in manga, they're either a) evil and therefore not worthy of love or b) treated as asexual.

It's okay if the romance is between side-characters or if the romance is not the key part of the story. Shoujo is okay as long as the Chessmaster's intelligence is shown and not just talked about by the other characters. Other than that, I prefer either het or yuri/shoujo-ai, but feel free to recommend yaoi/shounen-ai if you think it's really really good.

Examples That I Can Think of At the Moment
Cardcaptor Sakura/CLAMP universe - Clow/everybody-close-to-him-including-Yuuko-omg-Yuuko
Fruits Basket - Akito/Shigure
Rurouni Kenshin - Shishio Makoto/Yumi

PS: Any romance involving Magnificent Bastards are awesome too.

Naraku from Inuyasha most definately, and probably Lelouch from Code Geass (anime, but there are mangas). Death Note, too, it's chessmaster vs. chessmaster but more bromance over romance.

Pandora Hearts -- Break feels rather chessmaster-like and there's indications that he has feelings for Sharon (especially in the latest chapters).
Heart no Kuni no Alice -- Maybe the White Rabbit or the Clock-fixer (forget his name) counts as a chessmaster? Though I feel like there are several characters who might be chessmasters, but at least everyone is in love with Alice XD

EDIT: Oh, and that dude from Wolf's Rain. I don't think it's as big a deal in the manga, but there's that eye-patch guy in the anime who controls practically everything, I think (been a while since I last saw it).
