So what did you think of James Cameron's "Avatar"? Yeah, the movie with the blue aliens. NOT the Airbender series. 6q3451

If you've already watched it, please fill in the poll above. Feel free to discuss your opinions by leaving comments as well.

If you haven't watched it, are you planning to? Why or why not?

I'm also curious whether the movie critics are right when they say that this movie has a primarily male audience. Is that true? Any ladies watching this film? Please speak up! Lol, I'm a girl and I'm definitely interested in the movie; I thought it was weird that people were saying guys would like it more.

There's also a lot of buzz about the use of special effects and computer technology in this movie. What did people think of the CGI special effects? Done well or underdone or overdone?

And what did you think of the aliens? I thought they were kind of hot. The alien girl in particular was very hot I think. @_@ But my friend just found them freaky, "if charming in a weird kind of way". What about you?

Not to mention the philosophy/message of the movie - did you think it was too heavy-handed or was it handled well? What did you think of the historical parallels the movie posits in of our colonial past on Planet Earth, and our relationships with the environment as well as with other human beings from different cultures?

I watched "District 9" earlier this year and have been fascinated by the advent of what seems like another generation of alien movies. I think alien movies tend to occur more often before/after/during major wars, not just military wars but cultural wars, because they reflect our need to understand or at least categorize other people that somehow seem "alien" to us. Did anyone else watch "District 9" and if so, what did you think of the differences/similarities in the way both films handled aliens? I think the major similarity for me was that the aliens were sympathetic and were the VICTIMS, not the aggressors. Do you think it says something about the left-leaning political climate (esp. among movie-makers and artists lol), and the fact that there is a need to understand and empathize with the "other side" of Bush's war on terror, as well as old wars of colonial/imperial times? The fact that both movies also had humans "becoming" aliens reflects what I believe is a shrinking world in which cultures are merging, and there is a sense of the Other becoming the Self (and vice versa). What do you think?

Heh, discuss away!

EDIT: A reminder to please use spoiler quotes for anything that might ruin the film for new film-goers.

the movie is okay. to say that its not visually stunning would be a down right lie. the intergration of the CGI into the movie and it's interaction with real life is somewhat reminiscent of the interaction between the drawn cartoon characters and humans in "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit?". still, it was really, really, lacking plot-wise. basically a mix of pocahontas, ferngully, with the action scenes of lord of the rings.

what pissed me off was that they pay millions of dollars to the scientists to figure out about the ecosystem of the planet but when they present their findings they're laughed at. i'm tired of the whole thing about how corporate greed and trigger happy marines lack the comion to value any sort of life outside of their own and the sense to listen to their scientists, who they pay millions of dollars to find stuff out. seriously, it's getting old.

but it should really be seen for the visual effects, which are really stunning. if you get the chance, watch it in 3d. if anything, this film shows us the next step of movies and it can only get better from here.

also when i think about the movie, i think of the south park episode and i can't take it that seriously

The movie was enjoyable, but definitely no masterpiece. I'd still recommend it over all the other blockbusters that are in the theaters now.

Visually, it was great. I saw it in 3D, so that was awesome. Character development was good. Story was FULL of clichés. It had this whole Pocahontas vibe to it, and I'm sure it will be compared to it a lot. BUT Cameron knew how to use those clichés well, so it wasn't really a bother.

And no, tartufo, just because it has a female form doesn't make it "hot". You sound like a prepubescent boy. 🤣 I found her elegant and beautiful though, if that's what you meant.

P.S. I want Cameron to start on Battle Angel more! ♥

Second.

Visually stunning of course, especially with the 3D effects. Plot itself was fine, sure it was cliched but Terminator 2 and Titanic (both directed by James Cameron) had slightly cliched plots yet they are both regarded as the greates films of their respective genres. I don't know if Avatar can be classed in the same category, sure it was a good film, but a masterpiece? I saw the film with a group of my firends and they all loved the film giving it scores ranging from 10 to 50 out of 10, so perhaps I wasn't appreciating the film's deeper meaning? I don't know but I would like to see it at the imax.

Just got home from watching it. (in 3D, if that matters)

Was entertaining. From a visual standpoint, technical production values were impressive, but art direction was a bit lacking (or not my cup of tea, to be more accurate)

If you're into basic sci-fi, it should be on your "must-watch" list. If you think of yourself as a more discerning viewer, you can expect decent entertainment value, nothing more, nothing less.

In other words, it's no Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels. =P

Girlfriend seemed to enjoy it more than I did, if that says anything to the ladies here.

consider me lucky.... or not
the movie theater i went to didn't play the 3D.. the one that did is waaay across the town (equivalent to 3 full bus routes). on this movie theater only one studio that play avatar and is the small one (120 seat...or is it 150... maybe just a 100)
chronology:
-dec 17th found out that the theater is playing avatar... no money and time to watch at the moment... ah crap
-dec 18th the movie theater is pack.... looking up at the schedule, i see the only time i can watch the movie is already sold out... damn it
-dec 19th arrive even earlier then dec 17th still the same (sold out)... what the... how
-dec 20th skip the hole idea of going to the theater (sunday)
-dec 21st arrive at the same time as at 19th.. schedule still indicating that they still have tickets for it. but the line is so fricking long, i was under the impression that i might not get it... until.. that ticket seller lady just pop out from the the backdoor and suddenly open a new line... and then this security guy suddenly appear beside me saying "this way sir".. (i am now in the front of the line).. hoping for another miracle i tell her that i wanna watch avatar...and her first line is "sold out".... wtf.... "no wait we still got one more... is it okay if you sit here?" not caring where i sit i took it... i sit in the most front right corner where the screen is right in front your nose yet you still have to bend your body a little to enjoy the film

so am i lucky or what? 😀

great movie by the way.. i do enjoy the movie where humans are the alien of the planet

First of all, I just watched the ending part of the movie. But just base on what I saw on the ending part.... I'm truly awed with the beauty of the film.

As a 3D modeler, I'm very pleased to say that everything is well rendered. Compare to other movies like G.I. Joe in one part of the movie I thought that the rendering isn't applied yet but it is already the rendered version.I'm not saying that the 3D is not good, what I'm trying to say is that in Avatar they really do care about the small details of rendering. Especially the skin of the aliens (sorry I don't know what they were called since I came in super late), I really like how they manage to even put on those finger print texture (you know the ridges in our skin). Also they eyes! Great heavens! Truly a masterpiece! I could stare at those eyes for whole day!

I also want to comment on the flexibility or the soft movements of all character. I'm hands down to it. They really do take time to make key frames all the small details. Especially the hair! The beauty of their hairs! Also, the accessories in their body! You can see physics is well applied in the movie.

Sounds also! It was magnificent! The sound gives life to the animation because they gave more meaning to the film. They gave heart to the film. It was very wonderful how the sound gave me this surprise feeling every time a scene changes. It was good that I can almost feel that I'm in the war itself!

All in all... This movie is an artwork! A moving artwork.

Although, I can't comment on the story itself since I wasn't able to start the whole film.

Just watch the movie on opening day, and despite some technical difficulties, Avatar is the best film of 2009, perhaps one of the greatest movies of the 2000s.

James Cameron really put in a lot of effort to make this movie as epic as possible, especially with the Na'vi people, their homeworld and the indigenous lifeforms. They are really detailed, as if they were actual creatures to begin with.

The story might remind people of certain movies they have watch before, but once they actually see how the story is unfolding in front of them, they really see how unique Avatar is.

Anyone who hasn't seen Avatar, I recommend this film (and just in time for the Holidays) 🙂

It was good I it. The plot was pretty meh, but it was quite stunning to see, though a few bits I didn't really care to watch. Overall I didn't regret going to see it.

The fact that they straight up used the phrase Unobtainium made me laugh. Though it annoyed me a bit that half way through they decided we were there because Earth used up all of its resources instead of because the one guy was a greedy asshole.

Oh, and if I have to pay for 3D I want at least one thing to fly out at me. I know it's gimmicky, but really, he couldn't even have one of those little floaty guys float out in front of us.

Hahahaha! Cause its really good! The animation it is. My eyes were all teary because it's not blinking already. I even forgot to mention the beauty of their lighting! That is the hardest. I promise. Good lighting in 3D makes it more realistic. I don't know about the plot. Though I was able to grasp the idea of the plot easily. Just watching the ending part.
