I'm a girl and I'd say you should try:
Beck: About a boring guy, with no hobbies and nothing good going for him, becoming a great musician. It's really interesting once you get into it but to tell you the truth the patchwork dog was the thing that kept my reading at first. I don’t understand why this isn’t more popular?
Bleach: I know it's really famous and stuff but it’s really funny, has a good mix of strong guy and girl characters and has this entire mysterious back story to boot.
Trinity Blood: best vampire manga I ever read (although Karin is a very close second), action, romance and a new invention – vampires that eat other vampires (not as creepy as it sounds and all set in Italy).
Fullmetal Alchemist: great, interesting but not drawn out battle scenes, real tragic past of the two brothers but romance? Not so much… But you should try to branch out a bit more, there are heaps of stories out there that aren’t romantic but are still a great read that girls can enjoy.
Hikaru no Go: This is such an addictive read even though it’s just about the Japanese game Go, a classic.
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi: good but annoying art, romance and sometimes funny.
One Piece: It’s popular for a reason, I love it.
ZatchBell!!: Well this is actually for younger people; I read started reading it when I was 11, its hilarious when you’re that age and teaches things like friendship. I still like it and it’s important to me because it was one of my first manga, very cute.

Well it's more a seinen and there's a lot of violence and mature acts, but I really enjoyed Basilisk because the romance is like a romeo and juliet's story during ninja's period.

That is one epic necro ya got there.
Necrobump on and Basilisk as shonen?:
Shonen: Rurouni Kenshin Finished
Adventure: Hagane no Renkinjutsushi Finished
This is all from my master list project and these (authors) survived without asg a new series. So this is the "shonen edition" i guess.
15%-20% of my favorite writers do representative shonen. Decent form a divirsity standpoint as i have to throw in a genre or two more. Here is the rest to compare:

I'm a girl and I really, really enjoy Angel Densetsu. The art is well.. certainly not the best out there but I personally think this manga is something everyone should read at least once. It's super hilarious. Definitely one of the best comedy stories I've ever read.

An uncommon mention in these kinds of topics but possibly one people who enjoy the Shoujo demographic would like a lot: Saint Seiya - The Lost Canvas. It's a spin-off prequel of the famous Saint Seiya series, but one that according to many fans (myself included) is superior to the original work in many different ways.
There's also the excellent anime adaptation to it from TMS, though it doesn't cover the full manga. Depending on your region it's readily available on Netflix.
It probably helps a lot that TESHIROGI Shiori, before engaging in the franchise, had a solid body of work on Shoujo titles in her profile.
Also RAIKU Makoto (Konjiki no Gash).

I found those 3 to be very shoujo-esque, though only the first one is shounen, the other 2 are seinen

Yu Yu Hakusho.
It don't matter if you are a man, woman, child or alien. YU YU HAKUSHO.
Aside from a personal fave
One Piece
Magi
Shokugeki no Soma
Black Haze
1/2 Prince
I have to include some Seinen
One Punch-Man
Tokyo Ghoul
Tate no Yuusha....
I'm not sure if they are more likable to girls than most shounen, but I'm a girl that keeps Skip Beat in her top 10 at all times and I really enjoyed the manga above.
