Please Save my Earth - She's kinda the crying type at the start, but she quickly shapes up after the first couple of volumes. She also has tons of power over the male lead (who isn't who you think it is!)

Dance! Subaru - She's incredibly strong, but she doesn't find a love interest until the sequel, so I'm not sure if you'd like it.

Inugami - She starts out as a weakling, but she grows as the manga progresses, and at the end she is entirely a badass.

Liar Game See above.

Silver (FUJITA Kazuko) See above....

I think most people who read Hot Blooded woman don't see the author's note at the end of the series. Shes actually much more calculating than the main male but that trait doesn't get revealed until much later on. She's actually acting dumb and is very selfish.

For tokyo crazy paradise, although she's not as intelligent the fact that she saved the guy many times doesn't change.

Watashi ni XX Shinasai is also one of my favourites but although it seems like she's the superior one in the relationship I think they're quite equal. Both of them has not yet shown any hint of being very althletic yet. The heroine is a cell novelist and would even blackmail a guy to make her story more interesting, I think she's quite capable. Sad how it's not mentioned very often.

Grand Sun is similar to Tokyo Crazy Paradise but although she's stronger she repeatedly gets saved by the boy's invention so I don't think it fits what your looking for.

I'm glad I've stumbled upon this thread, I picked up so many good ones along the way. 😀

Once it updates A tackle on my Life is a good one. It's a story about twins, while one was left with the mother, the other is living with a female friend whose head isn't quite right. The both suffer a sad life and one of them is the definition of cold. She'd do just about anything to get money and it is later revealed why.

Are we talking about the same person? I never read the end, but at least 20 volumes of the series, and honestly, I can't believe that dumb, food-loving tomboy is calculating and better than the male.
Also, because I read some other works by that mangaka and it all ended like the usual.

So... now to mention some other series that have cool heroines in them so this post won't be spam:

Asklepios it has a cool character, but she's not the main protagonist who's a weakling. Also no romance. The others fit better
click if you don't mind that she was a he at the beginning
Kaze yo, Banri wo Kake yo should fit perfectly!
red lion I should probably reread it, but I remeber her as a very strong woman until the very end. Before you read Hotblooded women, you should try this manhwa.

Superior-she is a demon king and she wants to take over the world by killing all human. But, she met the hero who were assigned to kill her and somehow she ended up travelling with him. She always does whatever she wants.

Sengoku Youko = she isn't the fighting type but she is the leader type. The main guy listen to her and she is smart and capable of making all the decision.

Perhaps not quite what you're looking for, but in Black Lagoon, at least 97% of the female characters are much tougher, and handle situations better than the main. However, there is exceedingly little concrete evidence of romance, as it's action oriented.

The interests in Asobi Ni Iku Yo! are all more powerful than the main character, but he is quite determined which might level out their positions. Also, there seems to be a polygon developing, so that may cause you to leave it be.

ZeroIn's Female lead is a member of a paramilitary/private police agency, and is rather tough. The male lead could be debated as having a lower or higher "position" though, as he is enlisted as her squad's strategist and is a noncombatant.

Hidan No Aria Has yet another example of an armed police force, however the male character is an example of one of those two-sided heroes that change at the flip of a 'switch'. Main girl's still a bad-ass.

And for a troll...
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, as Haruhi is the club leader.

I wouldn't recommend Rosario + Vampire though, due to the immense love polygon that forms, but it is good for a laugh or two. (occasionally)

Ghost Sweeper Mikami

Mikami, the female lead, is seriously capable and just awesome. There's a little romance with her sidekick, Yokohama (the typical weak male lead in Shounen, but KEEP READING, there's character development!). The art's a little wacky but it grows on you, and the series is episodic so you can stop/resume whenever. Give the series a try, you'll enjoy it!!! I'm a girl and I very, very rarely read out of the shoujo/josei genres, and I really liked this one!

Natsu no Zenjitsu - Young professional falls for art student. She basically falls in love with him at first sight and wants to fulfill his needs so that all he can just worry about painting. It's a lot better than what I'm saying, just read it.
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - Intelligent chick falls for not so intelligent guy, but they have a sweet relationship.
