Why do people persist reading series that they hate? 5y4b66

I've been a part of this site for some years now and I love it! One thing I have noticed in the ratings and comments of some series every now and then is that people will comment on a series they read completely and make it seem so bad that it is painful to read. For me, if I dislike a series I'll read maybe 5 more chapters tops and then drop it if I still don't like it, like I did to haru yo koi and abara among others. It makes me question if it is really that bad if they willfully seek out more chapters to read. I feel like they really do like it and they just like to complain or they think it's cool to be negative. I see this most often with long running shonen such as bleach and Naruto. So why would someone keep reading a series if they don't like it and it isn't getting any better? 5fp6d

- Maybe they're bored. I have finished a lot of mangas because I had nothing else to do. If I decided to read only mangas that are worth my time... man, that list would be short.
- For those long shounens with 700 chapters... maybe in chapter 200 it was awesome... but then it started to drop... and drop. That happened with Gantz with me, 382 chapters. I kept on thinking: "what if it gets better again?".
- Some people just don't like to left unfinished. I'm already at chapter 400, let's face the rest.
- Some people have a dear feeling to it, even if it is bad and they will give a low score later. I tried to re-watch Inuyasha... it's pretty average, but I loved as a kid, so I watched the entire show again only to give a 6 later.
- What would be of us if we only read things we liked? Criticism is necessary and we only develop it by reading what we consider "good" and "bad" stuff. It is like watching movies. Did you like every movie you watched? Or some you just watched to see what you would think of it? Same as manga, you can't say "I hate Naruto" to someone who likes because they will say "how many chapters did you read?" and if you say "only 5", they will consider you don't have that much reading to judge.
Anyway, you can see I'm bored and listed 5 things.
There is plenty of reasons of why someone keeps on reading. I think it is a good thing that people have "negative" opinions about a series too, because if I'm interested in reading I would like to see if someone pointed a "bad thing" in the manga that I wouldn't like it too (like rushed ending etc). What I think is bad is when someone starts to say nonsense stuff about a series only basing it in a superficial knowledge (like "this is bad because it is yaoi", like all yaoi are bad etc).

Sometimes there's that tiny bit of hope that the plot will get better or that the characters won't make you want to backhand them repeatedly. 🙄

I suspect that in most cases they like the series they read. They just say they don't like them to appear cool, even if only in their own eyes.

Not gonna drop Naruto during the final arc, am I? I read through Gamaran, but had lost interest in both at some point.
But when you've already read so far and the chapters are really short anyway without a lot of text, you just keep reading.
I did give up on One Piece though, since there's no end in sight.
I reading this horrible shoujo series, and I only kept going because the releases were so fast and so steady, and also I was curious at what the conclusion would be. Other than that, I've read through a series I hate only once! Hopefully that number doesn't increase. I regret wasting my time reading through that manhwa...

You are like the dense main character in a shoujo manga.

Sometimes I drop it, sometimes I keep reading things I dislike.
For instance, the recent arc of Fairy Tail is so boring (IMO) but I keep going since I've already invested so much that it'd be a waste to drop it.
For short manga, I keep reading it since I got the time and later I can give a review/rating so it can help people who looking for a manga to read.
And for manga that I dislike since the first chapter, I will drop it instantly hahaha~

Interesting responses. I appreciate your replies. I can understand the investment and tiny bit of hope it gets better reasons. I think only a minority of manga fans do that, but they are very outspoken about it. It just bothers me 🙄

Haha, This reminds me of this one part of the Howard Stern movie, Private Parts.
They were discussing the average time people listen to the show and it was something along the lines of " People who like him (or the show, IDR) listen to the show for an average of 1½ hours per day, with the most quoted reason being 'I want to know what he says next' and the people who hate him listen to the show for an average of 2½ hours per day, with the most quoted reason being 'I want to know what he says next'."

I've asked people the same question many times.
The most common answer I get is "I HAVE to finish it! or "I can't NOT finish it!".
The reason? Sheer stubbornness to see things through, I guess.
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.

i'll sometimes do this with manga, I'll reread it if I dropped it and I might like it later and then read it all the way through, Or I want to see if it changes later one because there are a lot of manga that will change their story or artwork later on
A form of therapy ? I have speed-read series in the past but barely do anymore to get them out of my life. Stopping to look at hated magazines/authors new stuff is the best way to go cold turcky. Sill sometimes you have to look the abyss into the eyes just maybe not too long. The abyss does stare back at you ! Seinen what have you done to me 🙄 ?
I also read EU/US comics and am a librarian.

One of the biggest things I hate about manga/manwah/etc is that they can get abruptly cancelled, and have to try and wrap up long storylines in a couple chapters. I can't count how many manga wind up with awful rushed endings. And this kinda leaves a sour taste in your mouth. There are also the manga that run on too long. I don't know, the main good manga are the ones that go out on top. I still rate them high If I thought they were mostly good, but a bad ending would be enough to give it a 1 or 2 rating.

Because you need to see bad things in life, before you can appreciate the good.
