Found Another Great One!

After four chapters (in which quite a bit happens), I can tell.

After years of reading manga, I've learned to recognize and mostly avoid all the standard stories and styles. But I keep my eyes open for manga whose stories, drawing, and/or characters bear some relation to real life. In this case, all three of those factors measure up. This is grown-up material, more like a good novel or movie than a manga. It's intended audience is obviously young adults who are dealing with initial choices of job, marriage partner, etc. which will set the shape of their whole lives. That's what the characters are doing here.

And as the onlooker for this most serious decision-making of her older sisters is middle-school Hana, whose tall, elegant body gives a wonderful sense of her gentle spirit. The story seems to be being told from her point of view, and I hope later in the manga we will see her making some fateful decisions of her own.

A story about family

Fukuyadou Honpo reads somewhere between a shoujo and josei. (I first wanted to read this after seeing the magazine, Bouquet, mentioned in Kakukaku Shikajika. I think I want to read more.) The art is pretty strange-looking, but it isn't too bad once you get used to it. The story is great, and the characters are well done. While the main plot is the relationship between three sisters (and their individual romances), there is a lot about generational differences, unique Kyoto cultural practices, wagashi and responsible shopkeeping, and the problems that can result from keeping your thoughts concealed behind a mask of politeness. Fukuyadou Honpo is a bit long, but it rarely drags much. The ending has such a beautiful feeling of nostalgia.

I also learned a surprising amount about Japanese baseball while reading this manga, strangely enough...

really a lot of pointless setups

It's clear that the author honestly didn't give a shit about either the youngest or middle sister's romances after awhile. It begins to shift to the oldest sister's relationships and it only wraps up the other 2 as the manga neared the end.

There was a lot of flags set up that just get lampshaded

They set up a "finding love again" for the youngest, but it's really pitifully dropped in a pretty harsh way. Even though her first love stopped ing her after moving away (he claims it's because he doesn't want to interfere with her meeting new people (yet still moves back and tries to pick her up again, despite spending the last 10 chapters starting to open her heart to her friend and finally agrees to go out with him)). It was really cringy and made me lose all respect when she dumped the guy who has spent 3 years courting her immediately after her first love moves back. Especially since the guy in question had 0 background or depth, while the other guy had been fleshed out over the past volumes.

But the oldest sister's romance is good so read it for that.

Good excuse to re-read!
Fantastic and a true keeper, impossible to get sick of even many years later. It's a pity great stories like this one are rare and hard to find.

A satisfying treat that warms the heart

It is like an ordinary meal at first, yet once you savor it it'll left a satisfying warm feeling within.
Each arcs is endearing, and the cultural background is charming. You would want to visit Kyoto after reading this^^.

If only this goes to the screen, it would be an enchanting dorama with those Wagashi, Kyoto and kimono color.. (take dorama Asuka for example). I am grateful I found this manga.

oh and many commented the art, but just dig to several chapters and you'll embrace it thoroughly. And the art soften and refined towards the story. I think this style is better and more suitable than those 'super-cute-super-handsome shoujo style' or the 'mature and realistic adult manga style'.
This has its own charm (^___^)

How drama series should be

I am a big fan of josei mangas so I immediately started reading Fukuyadou Honpo despite the warning that it is oddly illustrated. I always expect that the plot in josei mangas matter more than the art so I ignored the unrefined sketches in the first few chapters. After reading the first volume, I decided to finish the whole 50 chapters in one day.

All three women are relatable from their strengths to their flaws. There really were moments when I would hate each of them for their bad decisions and then later love them for how they redeemed themselves from their mistakes. The rollercoaster of feelings made me realize how human this piece of work is. Even the cultural references about Kyoto feel real. It's like I'm a spectator from a true Kyoto neighborhood where three lovely sisters of a famous shop is located.

I loved the eldest daughter's parts mainly because of the psychological battles she's fought. The middle daughter, on the other hand, resembled the standard shoujo heroine stereotype who is headstrong and determined. The youngest daughter is the narrator over the long time periods. She seems to be the glue that keeps the family together - a mix of her first oneechan's refined character and her second oneechan's strong heart.

If this was adapted into a drama series, I'm sure it would be a hit.

Surprisingly Enjoyable Story!

I've put off reading this for a long time since it didn't seem that interesting but was I wrong! It's a well-done coming-of-age story of three sisters (mid 20's, early 20's, and teenager) and their individual relationships with their mother, their respective role(s) in the family and each other, and their love lives. All of this is told via a deeper look into the art & business of wagashi, the family business, against the history and culture of Kyoto. While none of this is screamed out to me as "read this" and the art is a bit dated & clunky, the characters and the story make you interested. Yes, the epilogue is weak & rather disappointing. All of that said, if you're ok with a quietly written story (slice of life) without melodrama, lots of love triangles & over-the-top emotions & flashy tricks, give Fukuyadou Honpo a try and find yourself pleasantly surprised!

The best series ever

I loved it. Story, art (which is actually pretty endearing), characters.

I was holding off reading this series for a while because I thought it'd be boring but was I wrong. This manga is completely unique, in of characters and plot. The choices and situations the characters face are real and there is never a miracle or a knight in shining armor to save anyone. It's also a beautiful glimpse into the ancient culture in Kyoto and wagashi/Japanese sweets (the scanlators include a different sweet at the end of each chapter).

It's a very refreshing story and, like another reviewer said, it never leaves a bad taste in your mouth. You'll always be on edge for the next chapter. Don't let the art turn you away from a great story.

(The 8.6 rating here is a tragedy. This is at least a 9.3, if not more)!

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT...

I felt so disappointed and I can't find a way to express that disappointment enough.

It, by far, is one of the best shoujo I've read. Sure, the art is not that great but as long as it provides the emotional rides to the readers then it is fine at its best, even unique I dare say. It may seem as a "typical" romance storyline from the author, yet it is not. I can't describe how different it is compare to countless titles that copy each others out there. I just like it cause it gets the most emotion out of myself.

And yes, I am disappointed because before, the rating was 9.1 or more. Now it's down to 8.5. What's more is that it's a 7 something over MyAnimeList. Now I hate that list! Damn! Why? Don't look down on the art! My art teacher once told me: you now look at a beautiful picture, what do you see? Nothing but hey it's really beautiful. But if art can send a message without being beautiful, it worths millions.

I had a blast reading this series! I related to every single character and loved reading about their stories. I have 3 older sisters, each with a different personality so I loved the 3 sisters (and even the in-laws!). Kenji was probably my favorite character all-in-all lol

My only problem was the epilogue. NOT that it ended horribly, but I had 3 things that really bugged me.

1) What the hell happened to their hair? Hana and Arare had really nice hair throughout the series and all of a sudden they decided to chop their hair to ugly haircuts!? It's a style thing I guess... 2) I didn't like how the Hina and Arare treated their children that way. You would think that going through all these emotions and drama that they'd NOT to treat their children that way. But Hana does make a good pt that parents forget what it was like when they were children. 3) I'm so over the owner of Fukuya falling in love with a wagashi chef. Komako and the dad. Arare and Kenji. But then AGAIN with Fubuki and Hikoichi?

But it was definitely a great read 🙂
