A very common argument against most of popular and semipopular (especially battle) shonen that comes and goes on the community is the pacing dilemma. As the series starts to throttle to an end, or either expands on its thematic and metanarrative endeavors, the sense of universal time almost always goes away in favor of either fighting scenes, character moments or sporadic dumps of world building. Or all in-between, which don't further let the main story advance.

Most people see these as filler instead of taking into how well the sense of place its conveyed to the reader, which is actually a pretty hard balance to strike - and I'd argue is the backbone of interesting places to visit, no matter how mundane or simplistic it ends up. Folks tend to say "showing is better than telling" but its actually more like "show AND tell is fucking great".

It's the fear of running out of steam that feeds on that very steam defueling because of caring a bit too much about the story itself rather than its elements from most of the audience. Well, Immortal Regis seemed to take a lot to for in this regard and did not want to stretch itself out to ad nauseam, to the point it doesn't really have a story arch, but rather a jumbled mess of introduction to its magical world and... class system, just to inmediately throw it all to the Sun maniac-style and present the "war arch" archetype right out of the gate to tease a new war arch on a second season.

What this ended up generating is a very noticeable disconnection between the story told and the happenings shown. Well, yeah, if you skeem through it hastily, enjoy its itedly scratchy, attractive and very female-candy artstyle and direct dialog, you'll get a protective-brother narrative with a sprinkle of romance at some end and a high-stakes cliffhanger. However, as soon as you try biting a bit further and enjoy the world and characters surrounding it, that's all you get - skeletons of stereotypes fitting their role, a vacuum-sealed magical world that surely tells us a lot about it but you can't really picture in your mind on a meaningful way.

Sure the ladies are attractive -oh they are, I love them- but I cannot give a shit about them because they've been dumping info and kinda sticking with the main character by default without an actual depiction of them breathing outside what it's been told. Why does the MC ending up caring about what some chapters ago he himself said was her resource? Why is she caring about the undead when some chapters ago he was just a looot of political trouble to her? There's a semblance of a romance plot growing but it's lost because it goes incredibly fast while losing itself somewhere. The students despised between each other, and the manwha does an attempt at bringing prejudice, but then forgets about it? Which is fucked because the MC being an outcast is... kind of a big deal for the WHOLE story being this short? This isn't Izuku Midoriya's quirkless situation - at least archs like the School Festival gives tone to the space 1-A lives by, goofy and carefree when they can because they're kids, the bullshit left to adults.

I have to guess there are palaces, schools, economic and industrial residences, class divisions, continents, by my own? Because there is something on the s, strange jungles and vatican cities and gothic structures and noneuclidean spaces. How much of them stop being a mere asset to play with?

Everything feels incredibly loose in Immortal Regis, and wasted because of it. So much development that I can't picture nor it tells me I should care anyway. Nothing has the weight it should because it's preoccupied on presenting its happenings in cool ways and upping itself beat by beat, to , without a second to let characters talk between each other stuff that isn't contextual chatter or the next narrative goalpost. It's like I'm playing a 2000s action RPG videogame with none of the spatial design, metanarritive and interaction.

Seriously, this is the kind of manwha that makes you appreciate the existence of side stories and silly story archs in other places. This is what happens when you cook your french fries way too fast - sure the crunch is wild but there is barely potato taste on them, only charred oil.

What a shame, the girls are sexy as hell and Serin is genuinely a cool character.

Even world building and art were great...
Tag's were somewhat misleading. The story was jumping too much it was a bit confusing. MC 99% of the time was either crying or running away while being used by everyone however they want and still he acted towards some of them like they were his family. And last but not least is ending with was terrible unsatisfying

Sojiro888 pretty much sums it up, story falls into peaces rapidly and the reader is thrown into a chaos where it's hard to grasp the sense of anything of whats happening and left with just random chars doing random things for no apparent reason in a building up mayhem, the author didn't even spend one chapter trying to explain and develop the setting and the importance of the events, characters, factions, weapons, etc., It's worth to notice too that the flow of the drawing is terrible, the fights are hard to understand and this also add to the general sense of confusion I got from this soon to be forgotten (by me) series.

Badly rushed, give it a

This is one of the worst manga I've ever read to the end (just because it's a prequel to CotA) and now I really regret the time wasted. The pacing is all over the place, starting with a generic MC getting generic powers and generic companion in a generic journey to getting stronger while a generic villain is setting a generic mysterious plot ... except the companions are cast aside and become utterly irrelevant, second challenge suddenly spins out of control and before the character ever even learned the name of his power or had a single real training session we are in the middle of apocalyptic world-shattering events. The villainous plot becomes irrelevant as the villain completely fail on his own without anyone really noticing he did anything and someone else stepping in out of nowhere with a completely new plot.

Huge events happen all the time except we only know they're huge because we're told so afterward, so it falls flat. The characters are inconsistent and badly developed, the fight scenes are confused and confusing, many interesting details are introduced only to be completely ignored for the rest of the story, new events keep popping in out of nowhere, and through it all characters keep talking about how incredibly important some items and events are when we have NO IDEA what they are talking about.

It's hard to care about anyone or anything in this story. You really shouldn't waste your time with this.

This Sucks, Read the Sequel Instead

Immortal Regis suffers from bad pacing, poor development, deus ex machina, and tons of other story problems. However, its sequel, Cavalier of the Abyss, has a much improved story (no doubt due to the writing assistant the author hired for developing the sequel). The sequel is good enough that it can stand alone as well, so don't waste your time with IR and go read CotA instead 😛

I would end up going on a 5000 word rant but that is not something I want to waste my time on for this.

One point I would like to address is that the story falls apart because the main character despite hating the girl that made him undead with a ion and with every reason to to hate her.... is magically in love with her.... how?
That is just poor writing at it's best. Honestly if I didn't know any better I would of believed Dal Young wrote this.

I really liked the story and the premise. Very interesting. Yes the character development is lacking but I think the snappy pacing of the story made up for it. The characters weren't bad and some of them were actually pretty good. The action was pretty good especially with its gothic feel.

Its obvious that the manga-ka was is in a hurry here. Perhaps to do with the Korean manhwa market. But that's just what I think. Its not 'GREAT' but well worth a read.

It gets better with Cavalier of the Abyss

It is bad. On nearly every point : the fights are chaotics, you never truly understand what happens, no single charcater is likeable, and that's logical since there is no character developpment, everything takes place in somethind like 6 days, it is rushed, first everyone wants one magic stone and then every one wants the other, and I think that's it.

Now good points : hmmm, can't really find one but at least I didn't get bored at all, I read it fast. Also I quite like depore, a bit possessive and sympathetic.

Anyway I don't recommend it, unless you are really in the demon fights thing. There are better shounens out there.

This manhwa feels rushed... but it was good.. i will move on to second season to see how it will end.. just read it if you dont have anything else and try to all those crazy names or you will get confuse when they talk about som1 and the only thing you will say is WHO THE FUC** ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT?
